Staff Report

ELMIRA — Paul Cardone scored the game's goal with about 15 minutes to play in the first half, helping Ithaca hand Elmira a 1-0 loss in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference boys soccer game Tuesday afternoon at Elmira Free Academy's Marty Harrigan Field.

Elmira coach Derek Hamilton said "it was a great goal." Cardone hammered a shot from just past the 18-yard line into the side netting on the far post.

It was one of five shots on goal for Ithaca (3-0, 3-0 STAC), which had six corner kicks. Elmira (0-4, 0-4) had four shots and three corners.

"I think it was a very evenly played match," Hamilton said. "We switched some things tactically in comparison to the last games. They seemed to work. Hopefully, it's a positive result that we're looking to build off.

"Ithaca's a really good team and we played really well."

Ithaca goalie Mark Demarest made four saves. Corey Swarthout had four saves for Elmira.

Elmira will try to break into the win column when it hosts Binghamton at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Ithaca Scoring - Cardone (1-0)

Shots/Corners - Elmira (4-3), Ithaca (5-6)

Saves - Elmira (Swarthout - 4), Ithaca (Demarest - 4)
