Majors (12 Year Olds)

July 7th, Beverly Hills vs. Rochester Hills

Beverly Hills took an early lead, 2 - 0, on a two-run homer by David Dudek. Rochester Hills scored 5 unanswered runs, and was up 5 - 4 after 4 innings.  BH had two runners on with one out, but two of our better hitters watched a called third strike, and the threat was over.  RH scored an insurance run on an error in the top of the sixth inning, and we went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 6th to end the game. Final Score: Rochester Hills - 6, Beverly Hills - 4

July 8th, Beverly Hills vs. Commerce

Beverly Hills hit the ball well but it was not enough. Final Score: Commerce - 13, Beverly Hills - 3

July 9th, Beverly Hills vs. Birmingham

Beverly Hills scored seven runs in the first inning, with seven hits!  However, through six innings, Birmingham hit five home runs, but BH stilled had a chance.  With the tying run on second and only one out, BH had two chances to hit the runner in, but Birmingham struck out the next two batters.

Final Score: Birmingham - 9, Beverly Hills - 8

Minors (10 Year Olds)

Congratulations to the Beverly Hills 10 Year old Team which went 3-0 this weekend by beating Beverly Hills 9s, Linden and Commerce Red to win Pool B! The boys will play in the semi-finals against Birmingham 10s on Monday, July 12th at 6:30 pm at Kenning Field in Birmingham.

Game 1:  The Beverly Hills 9's are a team on the move.  They gave us a great fight and proved to be a worthy opponent but in the end, the 10's prevailed.

Game 2: The Beverly Hills 10's played a near flawless game against Linden with the pitchers playing a major part in the victory.  Great win!!

Game 3:  This one was a nail-biter from the start.  Great pitching from both teams kept the game close.  The BH 10's were up at the top of the fifth, but a "Grand-Salami" from the opposing team put us down by 2.  At the top of the 6th, the first two BH batters were put out and "that's when we rallied!!"  The next two batters got on base and a passed ball put our runners at 2nd and 3rd.  Flawless execution of a designed play got our runner at 3rd to score and moved the runner from 2nd to 3rd.  Great base-running finally put us ahead by one run and the next batter up got the last out.  In the final half inning, great plays at 2nd put down the first two batters and the final out was a strike-out. Our boys showed a lot of heart. Great game, great comeback.

July 12th, Semi-Final, Beverly Hills vs. Birmingham

Regretfully I will start by saying - we lost last night.  Our dreams of a District 4 Championship have been dashed.....but only for one year.  I still hold to my time-line of a 2012 showing at the Little League World Series. We held the lead until the bottom of the sixth inning when unfortunate errors turned the tables and had Beverly Hills down by one run going into our last at bat. We fought hard and put the tying run on second, but in the end, it wasn't enough.

My heart goes out to all the boys.  I had a rough time last night thinking about what we could have done differently, and I went through all of the "what if" scenarios.  In the end, Birmingham had a better team for only one reason.....they play more together during the off season than we do.  I commit to all interested players and parents that if we can get more time with the kids, we WILL have the better team next year.  I have enjoyed the lessons we learned as a team I thank you all for the opportunity to work with your kids in the tournament.

Minors (9 Year Olds)

The first game was Friday night, July 9th. By serendipity of the draw, the opponent was our own BHLL 10 year old team – a team that owned a reputation of being strong and gifted.  However, the Niner’s knew these players, had played side by side, or against them. Familiarity balanced any first time jitters. The opposition opened the game with 4 runs and the Niner’s responded with 2 of their own. The second inning was scoreless. The BHLL 10’s opened their lead by scoring 4 more runs – end of 3, 8-2. But the Niner’s never quit, and during the 4th and 5th innings, after the opposition scored 2 runs in each frame, the Niner’s came right back to score  2 runs in each inning as well. The game entered the 6th and final inning. The 10’s scored one more and the Niner’s responded with 2 more, before the last out. Final: Ten’s 13 – Niner’s 8.

The next day, Saturday July 10, the Niner’s hosted a powerful Commerce Red team – all 10 year olds. Commerce won their first game, applying the mercy rule after four innings.

After 3 innings, the Niner’s had the lead 5-3.  Starting pitcher Alex held down the powerful Commerce team until the 4th when they exploded for 7 runs. But the never say die Niner’s came back with 4 of their own.  Score end of 4: Commerce 10 – BH 9.  Commerce would score again, and the Niner’s kept chasing them, with the final after 6: Commerce 16 – Beverly Hills 11.

Final day, Sunday July 11th. Four of the players got their first start in the game against Linden.  Trevor had a double in the first, highlighting a 3-1 start. Linden scored in each of the next three innings, but so does Beverly Hills. However, after four innings of play, the score: Linden 9 – Beverly Hills 7. Now, to the moment. Top of 4th, Linden scores 3 to go to 9 runs. We respond in the bottom, with 2. Score Linden 9 - Niners 7

Top of 5th, Linden adds another. 10-7.

Bottom of 5th, the first two Beverly batters take walks and eventually score. George gets a single and moves around the bases to tie the game.  Two more Beverly players get on base. Henry delivers a triple down the right field line to score the go ahead runs. He is knocked in by a sacrifice from Harrison. End of 5, Beverly Hills 13 – Linden 10.

Top of the 6th, the first Linden batter gets on base with a walk. The player attempts to steal but is thrown out by catcher George. One out. Next batter is their #4 hitter, and he takes a walk.  The #5 batter comes up, hits one “too hot to handle” and during the play the first runner scores and the batter ends up on 3rdHowever, during the same play our shortstop gets hurt and must leave the game. The manager is looking around the bench, and sees an eager Nick ready to come in to fill the position. The rest is a storybook ending worthy of a movie. The very next pitch is swung on and the batter smashed a hard liner towards shortstop. Nick moves to his right, reaches down and catches the ball in flight about two inches off the ground. The runner at third had taken off toward home on impact. Nick cleanly pivots toward third and delivers a perfect throw to an equally perfect receiver, Patrick, set in his position. Double play. Game over. Beverly Hills Niner’s 13 – Linden 11.
