Subject: Newsblast #9 for MVXC: T-Shirts, No Practice Friday, Mt. SAC Meet, and more

Dear Parents and Runners,

This week's news round-up is brought to you by the letter "L".

Label, Label, Label Your Brand New Team T-Shirt: The team's official 2015 team t-shirts are hot off the presses and being handed out by coaches this week. There's a long, sad history of these lovely shirts being left behind never to find their rightful owner again. So, please use a Sharpie and put your name on the tag.

Loose Reins / No Practice This Friday: The coaches are letting most of the Mustangs roam free this Friday. No formal practice will be held as the coaches accompany part of the team down to Southern California. Runners should run on their own or with friends according to instructions the coaches will give this week in practice.

Largest Cross Country Invitational in the Country? Yes, Mt. SAC! This Saturday, the Mustangs will field 4 teams at the prestigious (and crowded!) Mt. San Antonio College Cross Country Invitational. The races will be webcast live on Flotack and results will be available almost instantly online. Find information about the races and links to results and videos, visit the Mt. SAC website. Follow our runners in these races: #54 JV Boys @ 8am; #57 JV National Championship Girls @ 8:28am; #59 Individual Sweepstakes @ 8:58am (our varsity top 7 girls); and #62 Division I Varsity Boys. Go Mustangs!

Looking for a Few More Helpers: Mustang parents, you are doing great! Thank you for all your help so far. We can see the light at the end of our season tunnel and we just need a few more volunteers to make our last 3 events successful. Please lend a hand at the pasta feed, the EBAL Championship meet, or the team banquet. Lots of jobs are still available. Click any link below to sign up.

Nov. 5: EBAL Carbo Load Picnic at Oak Hill Park

Nov. 6: EBAL Championships at Shadow Cliffs

Dec. 2: Team Banquet

Thanks everyone! Go Mustangs!

p.s. According to the bookkeeper's office, about 30 families have not donated. If you are one of them, please reconsider. We are still well short of our budget goal for parent donations. EVERY donation is appreciated and needed, no matter how small. Please send a check in to practice made out to Monte Vista Cross Country. It is definitely NOT too late.

EBAL CENTER MEET - Varsity Results - CLICK HERE

Posted by Mike Davis at Oct 13, 2015 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Both Varsity teams continued their storied seasons with convincing wins at the EBAL Center Meet today.  Still holding on to their #1 rankings in the North Coast Section, both teams were anxious to race after a couple week layoff.   And it didn't take long to see that the teams were rested and ready for the challenge of the tough EBAL.

Boys Varsity Wrap Up
With a total score of a mere 26 points, the guys rolled to a convincing victory in the varsity race.  Four in the top five.   All seven in the top 14.  Average team time of 16:16 for three miles (5:25/mile pace).  The Mustangs outdistance Granada (2nd with 56 points) and Amador Valley (3rd in 106 points).  After Granada's Leo Skellenger crossed in first palce in an impressive 15:42, Monte Vista sent the next four finishers across the line.  Sr Tim Chrisman was 2nd in 15:53, Jr Tristan Miller 3rd in 16:02, Jr Daniel Maneloveg is 4th in 16:13 while Jr Nick Vomund is 5th in 16:23.   Close behind is another pack of Mustangs, this time with Soph Matt Johnson taking 12th, Jr Ben Smily in 13th and Jr  Brendan Lau is 7th man in 14th place.  Sr Peter Davis (24th) and Soph Carson Sawchuk (44th) round out the varsity team today.

Tim's time is #2 all time at Newhall for the Monte Vista boys team (trailing only Mike Rodericks 15:34 set in 2008), while Tristan's is #3 all time.  The guys were briefly ranked #10 in the entire state for Division 1, a ranking they hope to get back soon based on this type of performance!

Girls Varsity Wrap Up
The varsity girls took to the starting line today as the first step in the defense of their 2014 EBAL team title.  And right from the gun, it was obvious that the team was not going to let someone else take it from them.  Paced once again by Sr Brooke Starn up front, the Lady Stangs had four in the top 10 and their 5th runner in by #12.  With a score of 32, the team easily turned back second place Granada (55 pts) and San Ramon Valley (73 pts).

Brooke finishes in 2nd today, with the fastest time at Newhall in MV history (17:32).  It turns out to be the 6th fastest time ever run by a female at Newhall Park, which has a long and storied history (it used to host the NCS championships even). Brooke averages 5:51 per mile for three miles today!    Jr Meredith Corda continues her strong season, taking 3rd place overall with a strong final mile. Soph Maddie Coney is third for the team in 6th place. Frosh star Lauren Cervantes breaks into the top 10 with her 9th place finish. Senior Elana Lim has a breakthrough race, finishing 5th for the team in 12th place overall.  Soph Alex Wilson (16th) and Jr Morgan Dowling (25th) round out the top 7.    Olivia Bame is 26th and Karalyn Sawchuk (36th) round out the varsity team.

After a break to run the historic Mt SAC Invitational on Oct 24th, the Mustangs will take on these same teams once again on Friday Nov 6th, with league titles on the line!

GO MUSTANGS!

EBAL CENTER MEET - Frosh Soph / JV Results - CLICK HERE

Posted by Mike Davis at Oct 13, 2015 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Mustangs were ready for the 3 mile Newhall Park course today, and when the gun went off, all six squads raced with passion and confidence.   On the day, the team won 3 of the 6 races, took second in 2 others, and a close third in the other one.  The coaches were hard pressed to remember a better day in league competition!.

So lets look closer at the races:

Boys Frosh Soph
Up first, the FS Boys set the tone as the team took second to Granada to record their highest finish in years.  In fact, the squad was in first place midway through the race - just not quite able to hold back the top GHS runners through the finish.  Soph Danny Maguire paced the squad today, finishing 7th overall.   The rest of the scoring team were:  Soph Cade Hammond, Frosh Matthew Kim, Soph Sam George and Frosh Sam Milham as the 5th scorer.   Rounding out the top 7 were:  Soph Josh Elliot and Frosh Kian Elahi.

Girls Frosh Soph
The girls continued their dominance of the FS race in recent years by taking first place with a score of 38 points.  San Ramon Valley was second with 64 points.  With three Frosh/Soph already running varsity, the team had more than enough depth today.   Frosh Sidney Isom is 2nd overall, while teammates So Megan Bjeldane and Fr Melanie Kim also in the top ten.  Frosh Holly Meineke and Lillian O'Keefe round out the scoring in 12th and 13th place.  Yes, that's all five in by 13th place!  Sophs Natalie Couture and Angelina Stroud are 6th and 7th for the team, finishing in 14th and 23rd place.  Way to go team!

Boys JV Race
The JV boys looked to be in trouble today, with their top runner promoted to varsity and several other seniors out with injury.   Still others were coming back from injury with limited training.  So of course, the squad steps up today, turning in a strong 3rd place performance - just 3 pts behind 2nd place De La Salle.  Senior Anthony Rocha runs strong up front, hanging on to 4th place overall and first for the team.  Sr Will Jones is second man, running in only his second race of the year.   The rest of the Mustang scoring team:  Jr James Toyofuku, Jr Michael Gareau and Jr Connor Chamberlain.   Fellow Juniors Nate Curran and Tyler Matthiesen round out the top seven.

Girls JV Race
Despite being shorthanded due to some untimely injuries, the Mustang JV Girls squad were ready to take on all league challengers.  Right from the start - red uniforms dominated the front as Juniors  Cat Kiser, Paige Moldenhauer, Cheyenne Friesen and Carly Norhold ran in the top 10.  Cat would go on to win the race in 21:07!   Paige had 2nd place nailed down until a wrong turn in the last 1/2 mile dropped her back to 6th, as Cheyenne roared past to finish 3rd overall.  Carli was 8th today, fourth for the team.   Sr Kacy Hussey was fifth for the team in 20th place, while Jr Isabella Chao and Sr Elise Norrid were 6th and 7th.   In the end, the team just missed first, taking second to Amador Valley 34-38.  So close!
