CRC finale

Posted by Mike Soto at Jul 14, 2012 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Meridians meet the best assembled team they've seen this summer in the CRC DH finale, mustering only 3 hits on the afternoon.   Our boys on the bump did well though with Mears tallying 9 K's in his complete game effort, Reese holding their sticks to 1 run through 5 in Game 2 and Bolia getting recruited for postseason play with the Cincinnati Chiefs.   Finals: 0-6, 0-3

Couture, Scheffel and Love with our scarce knocks and good defense all day behind the Meridians arms, specifically Couture running down many a fly ball and Averwater behind the dish blocking and assisting in the 5-2-3 double play in Game 2 started by Riggan.   Great attempts by our rotating shortstops/pitchers with Bolia deep in the hole and Reese up the middle in the Hille beachfront.

We don't get a game time or opponent until after 6pm Friday night and it's not where & who it was supposed to be, but we get a game in despite the break in the NKABL schedule.   We bring some lefties down to Ludlow to gander at their short porch and find it twice with both Weinewuth and Mears depositing a pill in the rock garden.

Bolia makes his return after another 2 weeks off, but only wants the first two innings and 51 pitches (4 K's).   Scheffel steps in for the next few frames, Mears gets him out of the 5th and Reese takes the 7th and the unfortunate walk-off loss.  Final: 8-9

Mears with 2 hits including his line-drive home run in the 6th to tie up the game, Bolia maintains his 1.000 batting average with 2 more hits and a BB, multi-hit nights for Kraus, Parkhurst (3) and Arnold who ties it back up in 7th with a clutch knock.   Weinewuth makes a cameo with a 2B, HR and 2 runs so that Reese can make his 2012 catching debut - tossing out the lead-off runner right away in the 1st.   Mears picks off a baserunner as well.

Sunday brings a good roster as well despite a blown tire on 275 and a potential dog in heat...

Mears lets a trickler through his legs on the mound just to be able to turn and whip it to 1st in time.   13 K's in his 6 innings including the side + one in the 5th.   Kraus pops the nitrous rounding 3rd right through the bench-proclaimed "Stop!" sign to score on a high throw in the 5th.

Clim makes his first cameo of the summer going 3-3 with a HBP as well to score 3 runs, Reese with 3 hits (2 2Bs), Averwater with 2 crack bamboo hits, Kraus with 2 runs and Mears with a 2B, 2 SB and 2 runs.

Umpires enforce the time-limit due to the heat so we wrap up in 6 innings with the Bandits then losing players after Game 1.  Final: 9-3 & their forfeit (Chris Arnold fires the official first pitch of Game 2 for the Win, but the umpires - already in the parking lot - call it a "ball" from all the way out there...)

Two teams bow out of their Saturday games, including our scheduled opponent and results in Meridians vs. Whales yet again...   They get 3 right away and keep the lead until the 3rd and we never look back (7-run 4th), scoring a season-high 15 on the night.  Final: 15-8

Kraus tosses all 7, but may have been done in 4th when he stops at 3rd on yet another Mears' triple.   3 hits, 3 runs for Arnold out of the lead-off spot - 2 hits, 2 runs from Witt - 3 hits, 2B out of Herby and Parkhurst picks up the textbook ground-rule triple.   Soto with 2 hits, 2 runs - Riggan scores twice and Couture with 2 hits and 3 runs.

Sunday brings the Bombers who we've been looking forward to as another good team on Sundays.   They are as advertised with good sticks & infield defense, but little pitching.   They open things up with their big inning in the 3rd dropping 5 on us, but we scratch back with 3 in the 4th, 1 in the 5th and 2 in the 6th to take an 8-7 lead into the final frame.   (Both teams already scoring 2 each.)

After Reese holds them scoreless for 5 innings in relief and getting Mears off the hook, the Bomber bats come back to life in the 9th to push 3 across to win by two.  Final: 8-10

Web gem by Riggan with a diving stop in the 3rd base hole and throw across (along with another good stop & put out as well).   Couture with 3 runs, Mears with 3 hits (2B) and Herby with 2 hits.

Our attempt at defense is a fail and too little offense despite breaking on a high note with a 5-inning, 10-run ruling Sunday afternoon.   Before the easy one, we scrap through two tight ones Saturday night and Sunday morning with errors doing us in in each contest - ending in walk-offs for each of our opponents.   Bolia makes his return after a few weeks off, tallying 5 K's with his 65 pitches.   Reese wraps it ups, but gets tagged with the loss vs. the Ludlow Trojans.  Final: 3-5

Sunday morning comes too soon, but Dizzy makes his return to a rutted mound at Roselawn, this time with a more human-like 9 K's (at least) this go-around.   We try different variations of an infield behind Diz, but can't find the right mix while he guts through all 8 innings vs. the Cincinnati A's.  Final: 7-8

Mears (providing the only real highlights Saturday night: 3-3, 2 2Bs, 3B, 2 runs) stays hot in Game 2, helping himself to the easy victory (Final: 11-1) going 3-3 again with another 3B to knock in the 10th run.

Riggan (3-3, run), Lahmers (2-2, 3B, run) and Soto (2-3, run) provide most of the offense in Game 1.   Mears gets help from Meza (2 runs), Kraus (2-2, 2B, 2 runs) and Love (3 BBs, 2 runs) in Game 2.

Split decision

Posted by Mike Soto at Jun 16, 2012 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Meridians wander into familiar territory taking on the Whales yet again Saturday night, but this time with a new lefty to face.   Scoring stays tight for awhile, but Kraus keeps them quiet for the most part while our bats shift into gear for a Final: 11-5

Parkhurst leads the way going 4-4 with 2 2Bs and taking extra bases all night on the basepaths, Mears with a loud triple and Scheffel with a booming double to the fence in center.   Arnold & Vickery with 2 hits each and 2 runs for Meza in his Meridians debut.

Kraus picks off yet another baserunner in his complete game Win (12 K's including the side in the 3rd) and Herby handles the dish for us all night.

We get cancelled Sunday, but get turned right back around once we find out we'll have an umpire on a still playable field.   We re-convene for 1, 7-inning match-up with the Brew-Crew who come out swinging to jump up 6-0 before we start our scoring in the 4th.   Mears with another triple and 3 hits total - Kraus, Vaughn & Averwater with 2 hits each.   We score 5 in the 7th to get the tying run to 1st, but can't complete the comeback.  Final: 8-11

Mears tosses the first 3, Reese wraps it up - another Lahmers cameo to handle the dish.
