Posted by Robert Griffin, Jr at Jul 22, 2004 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
The Five Track & Field Club returns from their Games of Texas experience with three records, 7-Golds, 2-Silver, 3 Bronze Medals, and 15 top twenty finishes. The host City in the Dallas area of Grapevine witnessed great form and sportsmanship from the athletes they referred from “The Cove”. Donald Buckram established the intensity by which one record in particular would be broken. Donald’s preliminary 200m time of 22.67 seconds served notice and weighted heavy on the mind of his competitors as he lowered in it the finals to 22.42 seconds for Gold. Donald recovered from a tight start in the 100m Dash blazing to the tape in 10.90 for the Bronze Medal. Robert L. Griffin, III (14) came to Games of Texas with one purpose, and that was to eclipse the 2-year old 110m hurdles record held by his fellow Jack Rabbit Donald Buckram of 14.98 seconds. The Jackrabbits over the last five years has produced accomplished, aggressive and skilled hurdlers like Johnathan Woods, Alphonso Powell and Donald Buckram. Donald like Renaldo Nemaha, the first man to go under the magical 13 seconds barrier in the 100m High Hurdlers (42-inch), Donald proved a 14-year old could drop below the untouched 15 second barrier in 2002. Anyone who knows Robert, will tell you the “Hurdles” is his love, strength, and focus in Athletics (Track & Field). We had two weeks to increase his rhythm and height approach from the 100m low hurdles (30 inches) in AAU to the 110m High Hurdles (36-inch). His form took shape and now it was up to him to hold on to his focus and drive. On July 24, 2004, in the preliminary his was out early and fast to a blazing 15.16 seconds, to him a bit disappointing. An hour later he ran the 400m and broke the record of 51.78 and moved it down to 51.21 seconds. He wanted to challenge that record in the finals, but his preliminary race was a little faster that he had anticipated. So, now his focus was back on the 110m hurdles records for Sunday, July 25, 2004. He applied all the principles in stretching, eating and rest in his approach to eclipse the 15-second barrier. On Sunday, at or about 10:00 am, he lined up in lane number four only focus on his lane, the gun, and 14.98 seconds. The gun sounded and out Robert sprinted over the first hurdle, by the 6th hurdle, Robert was at 8 seconds and the crowd knew something special was going to happen. He crossed the line and the clock read 14.81 seconds. He thanked GOD to a stadium applause for his accomplishment. Robert secondary goal was to break the High Jump Record at 6’2”. His anticipation nearly got the best of him at 5'10", where for the first time of the season he missed that height, not once, but twice. He gathered himself from the advice of his coaches, and toppled 5'10, 6' and new University Interscholastic League (UIL) record at 6' 2 3/4". He had concluded the Games of Texas competing in 3-events, 3-records, and 3-Gold Medals. The Jack Rabbits Prince of the Sprints, Steffin McCarter (7) was challenge in all three of his events. He soared 12’8” to win Gold in his Long Jump competition. He recorded the fastest preliminary times in the both the 100m (14.26 sec) and the 200m Dashes (30.82 sec). In the finals his was tested, pushed and then pursued as he crossed the 100m final line at 12.26 seconds. A little fatigue, Steffin ran a blazing curve sitting up a true nail biting finish. He could not maintain his forward momentum at that pace, as a larger youth outpaced him to the end. Steffin ran his personal best 200m Dash in 30.72 for a Silver Medal. Donovan Johnson (12) was simply a trooper on a mission. Primed to soar over 5’ in the High Jump, but the competition was suspended from Saturday to Sunday due to lighting and inclement weather. This change provided a conflict in him starting the 80m hurdler, which his prelim time was the fastest at 12.95 seconds, and the start of the High Jump. Donald had to leave the High Jump, and line up for the hurdles finals. The sounded and off he sprinted cleanly for the first seven hurdles. He relaxed a bit over the eighth hurdle tapping it a bit, finishing in 12.82 for the Gold Medal. He had to runback to the High Jump and start jumping immediately. He may not admit it, but the hurdle race took a bit out of him. He missed his first two jumps at 4’4”, before getting his rhythm to clear that height, 4’6” and 4’8”. His jump was good, but his technique gave way, and he finished 3rd for Bronze. Dejon Griffin (15) was our first 2005 Games of America qualifier with a throw of 33 feet 10 inches sending the round weighted metal ball into orbit. She achieved the Bronze Medal for the Shot Put. Jasmine Clarke (15) had been running at or near the 2 minute, 20 seconds record pace was paired up with the slowest heat. So she would have to go along and fight for the record. Her first lap was a very encouraging 1 minute 5 seconds. She noticeable slowed down tremendously on the back stretch, after encouragement, she regained her form and sprinted in at 2 minutes, 28 seconds. The second heat had to young ladies eclipse her time place her third overall with the Bronze Medal. She ran the 400m a day earlier and placed 10th overall with a time of 1 minute flat. The Jack success didn’t stop with the medal winners, as 14 Jack Rabbits finished in the top twenty of their respected division. 1) Dejon Griffin (15) was fourth in the Discus Throw with a 102’ top attempt. 2) Daniel Ruff (9) the Jack Rabbits pint sized rocket won his timed finals 800m heat in a time of 2:44.21. He placed sixth overall in a tough final analysis, because he didn't get the chance to run against his faster peers, who several he beat heads up. 4) Jasmine Williams (14) recovered from a slow start in the 100m finals to earned sixth placed with 12.88 seconds in a highly contest race of power and technique. 5) Troy Vital (14) placed sixth in the 400m finals with a time of 54.02. 6) Casey Stephens (15) place 8th in both the Long Jump (16’ 1”) and the 100m Hurdles (16.09). 7) Michael Griffin (12) ran a person best of 14.48 in the 80m Hurdles to finish 9th overall. 8) Khristina Ruff (14) clocked a 17.36 seconds in the 100m Hurdles to finish ninth overall. 9) Kelsey Sloan (12) finished 10th in the 1600m with a personal best of 6:03.9 and 13th in the 800m with a time of 2:42.46. 10) Jasmine Williams (14) finished 11th in the 200m Dash in a 27.09 seconds. 11) Donovan Johnson (12) finished 12th in the 200m Dash in 27.92 seconds. 12) Alexandria Norris (11) finished 12th in the 80m Hurdles in 15.99. 13) Brandin Byrd (12) finished 16th the 100m Dash in 13.52 seconds. 14) Bobby Martinez (8) finished 16th in the Shot Put with a throw o 12’ 3”. 15) Demitria Pace (14) finished the 800m run in 2:48.22 seconds. Other meets results were: Sabrina Martinez (7) was fifth in the 800m run in 3:35.02. Bobby Martinez (8) was seventh in her heat of the 800m in a time of 3:25.77. Troy Vital (13) ran a 26.04 in the 200m Dash good for seventh place in his heat. When ask about the TAAF experience, Kelsey’s mom, Mrs. Silva Sloan stated. “I liked it. I thought it was decent. The meets were nice at Baylor University and in the Dallas area. These meets seem to run much smoother than AAU.” The Texas Amateur Athletic Federation has always been a great track circuit to extend our summer track experience. It’s no knock to AAU, as our Jack Rabbits must continue to pursue a competitive edge. The Five Hills Jack Rabbits leave what the Dallas folks called, “The Cove” enroute to De Moines Iowa on Friday morning. Coach Griffin says, “This week practice is all technical and advance execution of drills with progressive stretching throughout each session.” He expects his Jack Rabbits to eat plenty of green leaves, lean meats, drink plenty of water, and sleep a minimum of 8 hours in support of having their bodies perform at an optimal level.
The Five Hills Track & Field Club achieved an unprecedented 12 athletes competing in 29 events during the AAU Junior Olympics in Des Moines, Iowa in August 2004. Solely identifying the twelve newly crowned Olympians would not acknowledge the summer track program true worth and efforts. So let's examine the Jack Rabbits and their competitive efforts. We must start off with the Jack Rabbits' Sprint King Donald Buckram (100m, 200m) and the seven different Jack Rabbits who made it to the Region 9A State Championship in San Antonio. Well for starters, our explosive pint-size sprinter Steffin McCarter led a talented pool of sprinters in both the 100m and 200m Dashes, which included Brandin Byrd (12), Brittney Noorwood (9), Desha' Smith (10), Jasmine Williams (15), Troy Vital (14) and Anthony Cotton (14). The King of the sprints, Young Buckram performs his agility and explosive power in a highly regarded and contested events. The Quarter Milers (400m) consisting of 4-time Olympian and 4-time National Champion Robert Griffin, III, Jasmine Clarke, and Daniel Ruff was up to the challenged in the serious and competitive charged to the Championship round. Our half milers (800m) are led by Jasmine Clarke (15), and followed attentively by Daniel Ruff (9), Toni Johnson (13), Michael Griffin (12), and Kelsey Sloan (12). The cornerstone of the Jack Rabbits Long Distance Racing program is Zachary Ornelas (13), who inspired his sibling Olivia Ornelas, and teammates Kelsey Sloan, and Demitri Pace to challenge themselves within first before taking on their highly regarded competitors. Jacqueline Williams (10) is a race walking machine, as she exhibited great speed walking technique to influence fellow Jack Rabbits of her true craft. Pole Vaulting is not a lost art in the Five Hills Country, as Anthony Cotton (14) and Kyle Strickland (14) soar above the track atmosphere over the horizontal bar with technical flare. Our Discus Throwers are packed with a talented pool of young ladies, Dejon Griffin (15), Star Martinez (12), and Tiffany Frailey (12) had a whale of a time with the power throws and later introduced spinning/whip action, which sent the Discus even further into the air. The Shot Put Throwers were plentiful as Dejon Griffin (15), Bobbie Martinez (9), Brandon Varisce (10), Ryan Babbs (9), Shawn Noorlun (9), Sabrina Martinez (7); all were determined, competitive, and committed to task. The High Jumping Jack Rabbits' Rashad Hawk (16), Robert Griffin, III, Donovan Johnson (12), Michael Griffin (12) were top notch jumpers over the horizontal bar. Wow, and there are still the Triple Jump, where Solomon Williams, Rashad Hardy, and Desmond Gibson (14) all Youth Boys honed their skills with competitive practices and meet performances. The Jack Rabbits Long Jumpers utilized their sprint speed finely messed with technical jump off to soar far in the sand pits. Our Jack Rabbits consisted of Casey Stephens (15), Troy Vital, Robert Griffin, III, Donovan Johnson, Michael Griffin, Alexandria Norris, Daniel Ruff, Brittney Noorwood, and Steffin McCarter. The Hurdling program has continued to gain great exposure as 2002, 2003, 2004 Olympian Robert Griffin, III led the charge with the national's fastest 100m hurdling time of 13.55 seconds for Youth Boys. Casey Stephens, Khristina Ruff, Rashad Hardy (13), Solomon Williams (13), Donovan, Michael Griffin, James Buckmire (12), Romando Garcia (12), Chris Barrick (12), Chris Haynes (13), Alexandria Norris, Olivia Ornelas. Donovan Johnson anchors the sprint hurdles in the Midget Boys (12 years old) Division with the third fastest time in the nation of 13.85 seconds in the 80m Hurdles. Troy Vital and Brittany Clarke (13) challenged themselves in the half lap hurdles of 200m. Their natural 200 meters sprint speed gives them a decisive advantage over the curving 5 hurdles. Our Track Club even had several athletes take their skills to the "Test of Will" in the Multi-events. Ryan Babbs led the charge in the Triathlon, Troy Vital, Robert Griffin, III, Rashad Hardy, Kyle Strickland, Donovan Johnson, and Michael Griffin competed in the Pentathlon. Casey Stephen Challenged herself for two days of events in the Girls' Hepthalon. The Track Program is multi-facets, and there's an event for all who may just want to throw or jump, and for the purist at heart who wants to gain running or sprinting supremacy. "Our program is a very small representative sample of the talent within this community. We strive to have no idle youth during these troubling times. There's many games to play like football, baseball, basketball, and soccer. Their only one truth sport to engage, test your will, determination and commitment to task; Track and Field. Mrs. Strickland, who son Kyle is an emerging Pole Vaulter and Pentathlete, says, "Kyle really began taking track serious as the season progressed. He (Kyle) used to hide before practice, and then he didn't want to miss practice as the competition grew fierce." A summer full of travel, competitive efforts, while merging much kinship both within the team, and amongst competitors. All 86 Jack Rabbits provided their fellow Olympian with something special from practice habits to a will to achieve. The twelve athletes soon to be mention can look toward their fellow Jack Rabbits for inspiration, which was developed in those very hard practices running hills, pulling tires, and peforming a multiple amount of tasks with the jump rope. So, here's the Five Hills Track & Field 2004 Junior Olympians: Leading the way is Ryan Babbs, 1st-time Olympian in the Sub Bantam (9 years old) Boys Triathlon. Daniel Ruff, the Jack Rabbits pine-sized quarter-miler place 4th in the Sub-Bantam Boys 800m Run expanding his ability and arsenal, also a 1st time Olympian. He won his heat, and will prove to the other three Texans whose the best 800m in Iowa. The Primary Boys' (6-8 years old) Steffin McCarter provided excited in the track club as he qualified in three events for the Junior Olympics. He was 1st in the 100m, 2nd in the Long Jump, and third in the 200m, not bad a first time Olympian. Olivia Ornelas is now a 3-time Olympian, as she increased her running distance and ability winning the Silver Medal in the 3000m Run with a time 12 minutes, 7 seconds. She ran 5 minutes, 29 seconds in the 1500m earning a Bronze Medal for her 3rd place finish. Alexandria Norris, also a 3-time Olympian, won a Bronze Medal in the 80m Hurdles with a determined time of 14.95 seconds. Donovan, A 2-time Olympian qualified for the Junior Olympics winning the Midget Boys Pentathlon with 1794 points, he won a Silver Medal in the High Jump wit a height of 4' 10", and a Bronze Medal in the 80m Hurdles with a time of 13.87 seconds. Robert Griffin, III exemplified his committment to the Jack Rabbit program with a high level of practice habits, and results to match in all track meets and qualification rounds. He won 4 gold medals at the AAU Region 9A Championships in San Antonio. His quest to defend his 2003 Youth Boys Gold Medal in the Pentathlon from Detroit, Michigan started on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at Trinity University. He continued to turn heads as he reached the finals in 100m Hurdles, and 400m dash on Friday, July 2, 2004. The great form (conditioning) of the athletes proved to be a stellar "Showdown" for Saturday in finals, July 3rd. Robert was out quick in the hurdles demonstrating great technique and clean hurdling to win gold. He immediately ran to the High jump Pit to take three jumps to win that competition. He quickly moved to our rest area to mentaly prepared for a competitive 400m Dash. Once called, he lined up in lane 3 for the one-lapper; yes the world record holder Michael Johnson's specialty. The first 250 meters were ran quickly saviong little, the final stretch (100m) came down to a Houston athlete and Robert. The other athlete began to tire, but the Jack Rabbits four phase approach to running the quarter mile proved to be a great confidence builder as Robert ran pass the Bay Area athlete. He ran a personal best of 51.20 seconds. Troy Vital proved to be the most popular Jack Rabbits of the day as his 200m hurdles sent all members of the Jack Rabbits to the railings for a up-close and personal view. Coach Griffin relayed several critical areas of his previous race by looking at his semi-finals race on video. Troy started out running to qualify, but by his second hurdle, he, and his fans were screaming for him to win. He nearly did, running 26.76 seconds winning a Sliver Medal to the applauding and cheerful Jack Rabbit Family of his first time Olympic berth. Jasmine Clarke, a 2-time Olympian ran the two-lapper with power, grace, finesse and wisdom. She ran a personal best of 2 minutes, 22 seconds winning the Silver medal. Dejon Griffin came to the "Championship" with a purpose and a mission to throw the Shot Put high and far. She threw the 8-pound steel ball 35' 8" winning the Bronze and her first trip to the national stage. Three-time Olympian Donald Buckram overcame adversity in the Intermediate Boys 200m Dash. On Friday, he and six other boys rans a great race, but the automatic timing device was unplugged mistakeningly by an athlete near the finish line, so they had to send 14 boys to the finals, running two heats , and taking the fastest four times as a qualifier. Donald was given lane number one, while the other boys were positioned in the choice lanes (4,5,6). He consulted with Coach Griffin and receive specific instruction which Donald carried out to the the letter of his coaches' word. He won a Silver Medal in a blazing time of 22.41 coming off that tight curve in lane number one. He also won a Bronze Medal in the 100m Dash in 10.84 seconds in a very exciting power sprint. So, there are your 12 Olympians up - close and personal. We are gearing up for TAAF, so don't let up, whether you are 2004 Olympians or schedule competitors in TAAF at Baylor university. "Train Hard, Eat Right, Hydrate!!!!
Hello Five Hills Track & Field Club Family, Our harvest has begun to sprout. On Tuesday, June 29, 2004, Ryan Babbs (Killeen) placed 4th overall in the Sub-Bantam Boys (9 years olds) Triathlon. Ryan has been a determined young fellow accepting his needs for greater flexibility. He's without a doubt a dedicated athlete. Ryan achieved 194 points in three events. Attention-attention-attention, Ryan Babbs is the first Jack Rabbits to qualify for the 2004 AAU Junior Olympics in Des Moines, Iowa. Join me in congratulating Ryan for his distinctive achievement as a first year track athlete, and now an Olympian. Congratulation Ryan and the Babbs Family. On the heels of Ryan's distinctive honor, Jacqueline Williams (Copperas Cove) place third overall in the Bantam Girls 1500 meter Race-walk qualifying as a speed walking Olympian. Jacqueline knew the sprints and throwing events were not her calling. She knew what she wanted to achieve and how (work regimen) her success was going to be measured. She's a pretty good Long Jumper, if she finds times between all those laps of inter-muscle movement. She desires a great congratulatory praise for her efforts and determination. Jacqueline, we are in an agreement of desire, and pray that you continue to be definitive in your quest as a speed race walker. The Williams Family should be Godly proud of such an achievement. Our 2-time Olympian in the Long Distance races has an athletic title change; 3-time Olympian Olivia Ornelas (Copperas Cove). She won a silver medal in the 3000 meters with a time of 12 minutes, 7 seven seconds. This is Olivia’s first year of eligibility in the 3000 meters. She is a multi-talented Track & Field athlete, and has a will to be competitive. She likes watching great racing movies before her competitive races like the story of the late great American Long Distance runner Steve Prefontaine of Oregon. Olivia, battled through some painstaking practices, and now she savors her triumph in the Long-distance Race. Congratulations Olivia and the Ornelas Family. Our emerging nationally ranked Sprint Hurdler, 2003 Junior Olympian Ian Donovan Johnson (Killeen) achieved a great honor in winning a Gold Medal in the Midget Boys Pentathlon. His widely regarded Hurdling ability, High Jump finesse, and Long Jump proudness gave him a great advantage on his peer competition. His Shot Putting was amongst the best in the field, and his heel injury in the 1500m didn't stop the locomotive heart and desire to be competitive. The talented Johnson Family can be joyous on the heels of his victory, as Donovan Johnson still have unfinished business in the Sprint Hurdles, his specialty. Robert Griffin, III (Copperas Cove), now a 4-time Junior Olympian has been on a tear the last three years. He won the 2002 & 2003 Junior Olympics Midget Boys and Youth Boys Pentathlon in Knoxville, Tenn., and Detroit, Michigan. He was amassed 300 points more this year than his winning points of the 2003 Junior Olympic effort. Robert feels the Youth Boys Pentathlon record can be broken, so he's eyeing the task, and making great strives in his 3400 points performance. On the national level, he's currently 600 points more than his closes competitor, which is monumental when 600 points can only be scored in one event. Like Donovan, Robert has unfinished business in the Sprint Hurdles. The record in the 100 meter Hurdles is 13.21, and he feel he can get it down to 12.80 or 12.90. Well, the Griffin Family has much to be Thankful for, and the blessing bestowed them of being an intricate part of the Five Hills Track & Field Club Program. Next up are our sprinter and mid distance racers will take on the State's toughest athletes for Track & Field's highest honor; an Olympic berth. We feel good about our athlete's ability win; lose or draw!!! The Five Hills Jack Rabbits are competitors, and we have several cities backing us up in great ways. Our athlete's has exemplified "Train Hard, Eat Right, Hydrate!!!" Team Statistician
