The Commandos took the lead late in the game in a 6-1 victory over Trinity Presbyterian on Tuesday.  Trinity came into the game with a record of 18-2 on the season and highly ranked in the state of Alabama.                              

Hayden Layne earned the win on the mound for HHS with his second straight solid outing. He went seven innings, allowing one run, two hits, striking out five, and walking zero.

HHS had five hits in the game. Hayden Mullins and Brett Coker each collected multiple hits for Hendersonville.   Coker and Mullins all had two hits to lead Hendersonville Commandos Varsity. 

With the game tied at 1-1 in the top of the 6th the Commandos scored 5 runs to put the game out of reach.  Caid Sanders drove in a run with a bases loaded walk to make the score 2-1 and then the final blow came on a Hayden Mullins grand slam to make the final score of 6-2.  With the win HHS moves to 3-1 on the year. 

The Commandos openend play in the 2017 Gulf Shores Classic with a win over Smiths Station AL.  Brett Coker scored three runs, had a hit and stole a base while Nate Vaughn had two RBIs to back solid pitching efforts from Cameron Hansen and Kobe Carter to give the Commandos an 8-4 win over Smiths Station.

HHS broke open a tied game in the top of the 7th with four runs, the final blow being a two-run single from Vaughn.  HHS moves to 2-1 on the year with the win. 

The Commandos dropped to 1-1 on the year with a 2-1 loss to the Springfield Yellow Jackets.  HHS wasted a solid pitching performance from Hayden Layne.  The Sophomore went 4 and 2/3 innings striking out 4 and walking none, allowing zero runs in his first outing of the year.  HHS scored a run to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 4th as Brett Coker singled and later came around to score on an error.  But the Yellow Jackets rebounded to take the lead for good in the top of the 6th as the Commandos mishandled two bunt plays to give Springfield 2 runs. 

The Commandos opened the 2017 season on a bitter cold day by traveling to Clarksville NE to battle the Eagles who are predicted by many to be contenders in District 10-AAA this year. 

HHS got on the board in the first inning. Reid Nelson led off the game as a misplayed pop-fly turned into an infeld single.  Nelson moved to second on a single from Hayden Layne.  Layne and Nelson moved up to second and third on a wild pitch with one out.  Gabe Dalton drove in Nelson with an RBI grounder  to short and Layne scored on an overthrow to give HHS a 2-0 lead.  Dalton scored from second on a single from Chase Nelson to make the score 3-0 and Nelson would come around to score on an error off the bat of Austin Halas to make the score 4-0 before the Commandos took the field on defense. 

Cameron Hansen drew the opening day start for the Commandos.  The Sophmore right hander pitched the first three innings of the day allowing only two hits and striking out 4.  Hayden Mullins took over from there and tossed three scoreless innings of relief allowing 1 hit while striking out 3.  

The Commandos scored their final run of the game in the top of the 5th when Chase Nelson had his secone two-out hit of the day driving in Gabe Dalton who had walked and stolen second.

Sophomore Kobe Carter pithced a scoreless 7th inning to preserve the shutout for the Commandos. 

HHS will next play at Drakes Creek Park vs Springfield on March 16 at 6:00. 

Congratulations to HHS Head Baseball Coach Mike Hendrix who was inducted into Nashville Old Timers Baseball Association Hall of Fame!  This is a much deserved honor based on coach Hendrix playing and coaching career.  See the news release below. 

 

Mike graduated from Overton High School in 1971 where he was an All-Nashville catcher for the Bobcats. The previous summer Mike was the catcher for Shoetiques as they finished runner-up in the Senior Babe Ruth World Series in Wellington, Kansas......after high school Mike was recruited to play at Motlow State and after two years there was recruited to play at Belmont University where he was the two year starting catcher for the Rebels ( career .332 batting avg. ) and a NAIA All-District 24 catcher.......now for the main reason that Mike is going into our Hall of Fame:  After Mike’s freshman year at Motlow he came into the Nashville based Tri-State League and was the catcher for the Tennessee Pride Eggs ball club. The next summer ( 1973 ) Mike joined in with the Haury and Smith team that went on to win the Tri-State League regular season and qualified for the state Stan Musial tournament held in Knoxville, TN. where they prevailed as the STATE CHAMPION!....Mike and his Haury & Smith teammates went back to Knoxville the next week to play in the Musial Southeast Regional and finished with a 2-2 record while there.....the next year Mike led the Haury & Smith ball club to the Tri-state regular season championship again and on to Memphis for the Musial state tournament where they finished third......in 1975 and 1976 Mike was one of the main clogs for the Haury & Smith team as they qualified both years for the National Baseball Congress ( NBC ) Semi-Pro World Series in Wichita, Kansas. Both years the ball club had to fight through state and regional tournaments to get to Wichita. The games were played in the spacious Lawrence-Dumont Stadium where Wichita’s AAA team played. In the second game there in 1975 against St. Louis Mike hit a ball over the scoreboard in right center to give his team the win.
