Gallatin baseball team moves to within one win of earning a regional berth

HENDERSONVILLE Junior Austin McWhirter and senior Billy Campbell combined on a four-hit shutout as the Gallatin High School baseball team captured a 1-0 victory over Hendersonville on Saturday afternoon at Drakes Creek Park.

The Green Wave (18-9) snapped a seven-game losing streak against Hendersonville, the defending District 9-AAA Tournament champion.

The Commandos (23-6) fell into the loser’s bracket and will play an elimination game against the winner of Saturday night’s Wilson Central/Station Camp contest on Monday afternoon. Gallatin will face the winner of Monday’s afternoon’s elimination game on Monday evening and is now just one win away from earning a berth to the Region 5-AAA Tournament.

McWhirter (3-4) pitched into the fifth inning, allowing three hits over 4 and 1/3 innings.

Campbell came on in relief and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth, allowing just one hit over 2 and 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out two hitters, earning a save for the second consecutive day (his fourth of the season).

The game’s lone run scored in the fifth inning. Junior Jordan Mason drew a one-out walk, moved to third when classmate Andy Denning singled on a hit-and-run play and scored on senior James Rockwell’s successful squeeze bunt.

The two teams combined for nine hits. Senior Carlos Hernandez had two of the Wave’s five hits.

Commando senior Grant Williams (3-1) went the distance on the mound, allowing five hits and three walks while striking out four hitters.
