HHS DEFEATS TULLAHOMA 4-1

Posted by Andy Gilley on Mar 12 2015 at 05:00PM PDT

The Commandos made a spur of the moment trip to historic Grider Stadium in Tullahoma on Thursday night for the first meeting between the two schools in more than 15 years.  The Commandos came out 4-1 winners on a night where pitchers dominated the game for both sides.

Both teams were held scoreless through the first three innings of the game as Tullahoma rotated pitchers all throughout the night that kept the Commando hitters off balance.  Sophomore Andrew Dorris pitched a scoreless two innings for HHS before being relieved by Senior Matt Osborne in the third inning.  Osborne pitched a scoreless third before both teams would begin to score in the 4th.

Ben Smith led off the 4th with a double off the left-field wall, his second double of three on the day.  Smith moved to third on a ground ball to second off the bat of Grant Williams and Smith scored on a wild pitch with two outs to give HHS a 1-0 lead.  Tullahoma rallied in the bottom of the 4th for a run with three straight two-out singles.  Junior left-hander Brandon Fuller entered the game on the mound for the Commandos with two outs and runners at first and second to face Tullahoma's best hitter Andrew Lett.  Fuller got Lett to ground out to short to end the Wildcats threat.

In the top of the 5th HHS would regain the lead as  Braden Schwerdt led off the top of the 4th for HHS with a walk and stole second.  He was moved to third on a ground ball to second off the bat of Justin Long and Schwerdt scored on a wild pitch with two outs to give HHS a 2-1 lead.

Fuller was dominant on the mound against the Wildcats as he struck out seven hitters in his 3 and 1/3 innings of work while not allowing a hit.  HHS would add important insurance runs in the top of the 7th.  A one out doubled from Drew Richard was followed by a balk and a sac fly off the bat of Connor Fischer to make the score 3-1.  A walk to Smith was followed by back to back stolen bases from pinch runner Aris Welden and a throwing error allowed Welden to score to give the game its final score of 4-1.  Fuller struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to earn his first career win.
