HHS DEFEATS DEKALB COUNTY 5-2

Posted by Andy Gilley on Mar 19 2015 at 05:00PM PDT

The Commandos opened play in the Wilson County Invitational with a win over Dekalb County 5-2 at Friendship Christian.  It was the second meeting in as many years between the two schools in the tournament.

Junior left-hander Brandon Fuller picked up his second win of the year on the mound with a strong five innings.  Fuller allowed one earned run which scored on a wild pitch and three hits while striking out seven Dekalb hitters.

HHS never trailed in the game and got the lead in the top of the second.  Grant Williams doubled to right center to lead off the inning.  Williams scored on an rbi single from Braden Schwerdt to give HHS a 1-0 lead.

After Dekalb tied the game in the bottom of the third the Commandos would regain the lead in the top of the fifth.  A leadoff walk to Austin Winter was followed by a wild pitch which advanced courtesey runner Aris Welden to second base.  A throwing error by the Dekalb catcher sent Welden to third and an rbi single from Andrew Larson scored Welden to give the Commandos a 2-1 lead.  Larson stole second and later scored on a two-out single by Austin Brown to make the score 3-1.  HHS would score again in the top of the 6th to put the game out of reach.  Grant Williams was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game to lead off the inning.  Williams advanced to second on a single from Schwerdt.  An Austin Winter bunt single loaded the bases for Andrew Larson.  Larson hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in pinch runner Jon Swindle to make the score 4-2.  Schwerdt moved to third on the sac fly and scored on the next pitch as Drew Richard laid down a squeeze bunt to score Schwerdt and give the game its final score of 5-2.

Sophomore Andrew Dorris recorded his first career save by pitching the games final two innings.  Dorris allowed one unearned run while giving up two hits and striking out a hitter in his two innings of work to preserve the win for Fuller.
