WEEK # 1 of the 1-Mile Children's Walk Series

Jaime, Treasurer, South Texas Walking Club, Phone 956-686-2337 Children’s One Mile Walk Close to 100 children 8 to 18 years of age participated at this Saturday’s Rio Grande Valley CPA’s Free Children’s Walk in Pharr. All 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners received beautiful trophies and all 4th, 5th and 6th place winners received ribbons. The Free Children’s Walk Series will continue at the Weslaco Stadium this coming Saturday, April 26th starting at 9:00 a.m. Carol Schmitt, incoming President of the Rio Grande Valley Chapter of CPA’s, was excited and pleased at the turnout. “We want to help our schools find an extra activity for our children to participate and stay healthy,” she said. “Diabetes is at an alarming high rate in the Valley and we want to do our share in helping combat this disease,” she continued. Her organization is sponsoring this six city free walk series for all children 8 to 18 years of age. The series continues in Weslaco, Edinburg, McAllen, Donna and Mission in the coming weeks and will culminate in Pharr with the Youth Outdoor National Championship on Sunday, May 25th. A.C. Jaime, CPA and volunteer coach of the Rio Grande Valley Junior Olympic Racewalking Team, said that they plan to expand the walk series to the Brownsville and Harlingen area next year. Girls winning at this Saturday’s event by age bracket and times were as follows: 8 and under: (1) Diana Flores 11:25; (2) Ashley Zarate 11:57; (3) Myra Martinez 12:21; (4) Carolina Garcia 15:09; (5) Azelia Hernandez 16:32; (6) Kayla Godinez 16:45 9 year olds: (1) Crystal Mireles 11:55; (2) Dinorah Moreno 11:58 10 year olds: (1) Claudia Ortiz 9:32; (2) Bailey Shannon 9:49; (3) Brooke Shannon 9:55; (4) Sarah Garcia 10:27; (5) Melissa Carrizalez 10:56; (6) Marlene Martinez 11:57 11 year olds: (1) Hillary Perez 12:26 12 year olds: (1) Corina Ortiz 9:22; (2) Jeanette Avitia 9:33; (3) Karla Mireles 10:00; (4) Anaid Crosby 11:28; (5) Holly Panzer 12:27 13 year olds: (1) Ruby Perez 9:52 Boy winners were: 8 and under: (1) Humberto Alaniz 13:30; (2) Eric Escaname 13:49 9 year olds: (1) Esteban Keller 12:26; (2) Aron Barreiro 14:06 10 year olds: (1) Marcos Keller 11:21; (2) Cesar Rodriguez 12:11; (3) Ricky Vasquez 15:07 11 year olds: (1) Andres Jaime 9:59; (2) Bernie Garcia 10:24 12 year olds: (1) Roberto Vergara 7:46; (2) Ricardo Vergara 7:54; (3) Abraham Villarreal 9:18; (4) Adrian Barreiro 12:14 15 year olds: (1) Ernesto Vergara 9:03 Children from 25 schools participated at the Walk with children from Carnahan Elementary (Pharr), Shary Elementary (Sharyland) and Pharr Elementary (Pharr) tying for 1st place. Forth, fifth and sixth place was won by chidren from South Middle School (Edinburg), Garza-Pena Elementary (San Juan ) and O. Garza Elementary (Mission).
