November 29, 2016

The Clear Lake vs Fort Bend Marshall game is always a good game but tonight's game was exceptional. Marshall came into Lake domain boasting a pre-season ranking of  #3 in the state in 5A. Neither of these two very fine, well coached basketball teams deserved to lose but that's not how it works. It was a hard fought, thrilling basketball game between two noticeably prepared teams. The outcome was not decided until the last few seconds  The game was very close with Lake leading by a narrow margin the entire game until 3:02 remaining in the final quarter when Marshall took the lead by 1. The lead changed 8 times in the final two minutes. The lead changed 4 times in the last 45 seconds. What a game!

Despite going 3 of 9 from the free throw line Jeremiah  Maldonado led his team with 35 points. Ajare Sanni contributed 22. Clear Lake went 18 of 26 from the free throw line (69.2%). Marshall's free throw percentage was higher.

J Frank Dobie squeaks by Clear Lake 66-64

November 22

In the second game of the season, victory was not decided until the closing seconds. Missing too many layups and free throws cost the Falcons dearly in the second consecutive game that went to the wire. A Dobie layup with 3 seconds remaining broke the tie and gave Dobie the win.

Ajare Sanni led all scorers with 31 and was selected the Offensive Player of the Game by RCSSports. There were eight games played in the TSU arena sponsored by RCSSports on this day.

Lamar bests Clear Lake 85-81 in wild season opener.

November 15, 2016

Ten years and one day ago Krueger Field House was dedicated. As it had been for decades, the season opening game opponent was Milby High School. Clear Lake prevailed 71-55 in that contest which was typical of a season opener for Clear Lake.

Tonight in Krueger Field House fans were treated to a very special season opener. Against Houston Lamar, who can always be counted on to be very formidable adversaries, fans were treated to an exceptional basketball game.

Lamar is among the better teams Lake will face in the regular season this year. They shot the ball exceptionally well, they rebounded much better than most teams will, and they played smart, aggressive basketball on both ends of the court (when I review the game video I will be sure to count the number of goals Lamar scored from less than three feet from the basket).

Of the eleven season openers played in Krueger Field House, this game was by far the best. What made the game such a treat and perhaps the best season opener in almost 25 years was the way Lake responded to the high level of competition. It was an excellent display of Lake’s capabilities and talent against a great basketball team. With 5:17 remaining in the game Lake was down by 17 but battled back to make it a very close contest. With 33 seconds remaining it was a 2 point game. With 5.18 seconds remaining Zaid “Iceman” Harris calmly sank a 3 pointer to again make it a 2 point game. A questionable call on a Lamar baseline throw-in put Lamar at the free throw line to ice the thrilling contest.  What a game!

There were 166 total points scored in the game. Lake’s Ajare Sanni (junior) led all scorers with 40 points (4 points shy of the school record set by Alden Miles in 2013). Sanni had 27 in the first half and scored all 17 of Lake’s points in the second quarter. That is the first time in 15 years that one Lake player scored all of the points in a quarter where 10 points or more were scored. Sophomore Jeremiah Maldonado had 20, and junior Zaid Harris had 11.

This year's Lake squad is admittedly young with only one senior starter, two juniors, and two sophomores. The youth of the team did show through at times but overall it was a great game with exceptional play from both teams. The series is now tied at two wins each.

It is going to be an exciting season with several nail biters going down to the wire.

Meeting Minutes for October 2016

Posted by Donald Wilkerson at Oct 15, 2016 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

CLHS Boys Basketball Booster Club Meeting

October 5, 2016

The meeting was called to order at 6:34 pm by Melvin LeBlanc, President.

Opening RemarksPresident, Melvin LeBlanc began with thanks to those who have stepped up recently to lead committees within the club.  He mentioned Brenda Cowan - Programs, Dawn Navarro - Spirit Wear, Jennifer Eastin- Membership and Dawn Clary, Co-Lead Concessions.   He also thanked everyone who helped volunteer and donate drinks for the Gulf Coast Shoot-out. Sponsorship activity is going well this year.  Norman Frede Chevrolet is potentially going to sponsor the purchase of 18 additional backpacks for the players.  The Scoreboard has received a commitment from Texas Citizens Bank for $15,000 over 6 years.  The shooting gun, donated by the Clear Lake Islamic Center should be delivered to the school by Thursday, October 6.

Homecoming Parade - Merita Parker said that one fire truck is available for about 12 boys to ride on (will be determined by coaches).  She needs three more trucks and/or a flatbed trailer to provide seats for the remaining players. If no donated trailer is available, she may rent one from UHaul for $30.

Other requests for help with the parade:

  • volunteers to help create decorations on Monday

  • volunteers to help decorate the trucks at 4:30 Wednesday

  • 14 (empty) ice chests needed as seats in the truck beds.

  • Candy donations – each player should bring a bag/No stick or hard candies

Car Wash – Suzanne Sambell.  The Homecoming car wash will be held on Saturday, October 15 from 8:30-2:30 in the Popeye’s parking lot.  Suzanne will give pre-sale tickets to the coaches for distribution.  Each player is asked to sell 15 tickets, if possible.  All players should participate in the car wash.  An email will be sent with details and volunteer requests.

3x3 Tournament – Was originally scheduled for Saturday, October 22.  However, because of the reconstruction of the Field House gym floor, it has been postponed likely until the spring.  The coordinator for the event is Tim Jennings.  Confirmed that teams will consist of boys grade 6 and up.

Concessions – Paula Lucas.  She will recruit volunteers soon and will need additional help for the December tournaments, including the Krueger Classic.  Reminded everyone that parents are expected to donate drinks to help keep stock filled.  She will create a volunteer signup soon and will email.

Away Game Meals – The club is in need of someone to coordinate the meals for players this year.  Last year, volunteers made the sandwiches for the players, saving a lot of money.  Various options were proposed.  First away game is December 6.  Please contact Melvin if you are interested in helping.

Treasurer – Karen Zimpfer provided a budget update, our current balance is $9,670.09.  Karen noted that the booster club officers have suggested that we should consider changing our banking provider to Texas Citizens Bank in light of their support/sponsorship of the Field House scoreboard.  The membership unanimously approved of this idea.

Coaches Corner – Coach Penders Noted that there will have to be some morning practices until the floor refinishing is complete, which should be by early November.  The team rosters are not confirmed yet, but as always he hopes to keep as many players as possible.

Carlisle – Krueger Classic Tournament – December 1-3.  Clear Lake is the host and we will need many volunteers for all three days of the tournament for: concessions sales, ticket takers and entrance door attendants, clock table, and hospitality room workers. Please mark your calendars and make some time available to help with this important event.  Coach Frye noted that there are a total of 240 volunteer spots to be filled, including providing meals on Friday, and Saturday and Hospitality room food for 20-50 people. More details will be available soon.

Coach Frye- mentioned that each player must have a completed “Sportsman Standards/Parent Expectations” form turned in before they can participate in official practices.  Please make sure your son has turned this in.

Don Wilkerson – Acknowledged Gary Stenerson among the attendees as a former Booster Club president who has done a lot for the booster club and is willing to share his knowledge and help once again this year.

Membership forms are available, and those that have not yet joined were encouraged to do so as soon as possible.

The Meeting was adjourned at 7:42.
