COUGARS OPEN LEAGUE PLAY!

Posted by Charlie Cleaves on Jan 20 2004 at 04:00PM PST
Within minutes of closing out the biggest league win in their young program, the Cougars allowed the tying goal to visiting Valhalla, and settled for the 2-2. With the Cougars leading 2-0 with 15 minutes left, the referees called a controversial PK that left the Cougars and the home crowd watching as Valhalla's MARESA BAILEY converted the shot. With the huge momentum swing, the Norseman with renewed fight came back hard and got the equalizer when LYDIA JACKSON pushed a ball pass Goal Keeper JOY BLAND. Despite the heartbreaking tie, the Cougars showed incredible heart throughout the game and deserved better. ALI MENDOZA's incredible clutch goal with 2 defenders on her back and the keeper in her face had the Cougars up 1-0 at halftime. In the second half, EMELY RODRIGUEZ kicked a 50 yard ball that bounced high and over the Valhalla keeper's head to put the Cougars up 2-0. Coach Cleaves stated, "Another step for our program. As we continue to grow, we will learn how to close out and win these type of games. A great effort though. I'm very proud of the girls!" Next up, Monte Vista!!
