New Castle gets the sweep of HHC doubleheader at Shelbyville Friday

Shelbyville played from behind in both the girls and boys basketball games as New Castle swept a Hoosier Heritage Conference doubleheader at Garrett Gym Friday.

New Castle’s girls varsity jumped out to a 20-6 first quarter lead and extended it to 27-11 before Shelbyville rallied. The Lady Golden Bears scored the final eight points of the second period to trail at halftime, 27-19.

Shelbyville closed to within one possession several times and trailed by just three, 45-42, at the end of the third period. New Castle was able to hold off the Bears with 7-of-8 free throw shooting in the final period for the conference win, 58-53.

5’2″ sophomore guard Emma Hart topped all scorers with 20 points. Mandy Meek scored 18 for New Castle (6-6, 3-1 HHC).

Abby Brenner scored 11 of her team-high 15 points in the second half for Shelbyville (6-5, 1-2 HHC).

In the boys nightcap, Shelbyville also played from behind the entire game in dropping a 77-64 decision in the Hoosier Heritage Conference opener.

New Castle senior center Dawson Scott was too powerful for the Golden Bears. The 6’5″ Scott scored 15 of his team-high 19 points in the first half as the Trojans built a double digit lead going into the locker room. The Trojans’ Gavin Welch rattled in a three-point field goal at the buzzer to provide the halftime margin.

Welch was one of four Trojans in double figures with 18 points. Sam Maddy contributed 15 off the bench. Caleb Grow added 10 for New Castle (4-1, 1-0 HHC).\

The 77 points was New Castle’s highest scoring output of the season.

Ollie Sandman was the game’s leading scorer. Sandman, averaging 17.7 ppg, scored 25 points. Jakob Heaton added 20, including four three-pointers.

New Castle snapped a two-game losing streak in both the girls and boys series with Shelbyville

The Girls and Boys JV Basketball Teams traveled to New Castle on Thursday night to play the JV portion of the girl/boy doubleheader. The Girls led off with a convincing win to move to 9-1 on the year. The night cap didn’t go as planned with the boys being defeated by New Castle. The Boys fall to 2-2 on the year. The Girls will travel to Greenfield-Central on Tuesday for another important HHC match-up and the boys will travel to Whiteland on Saturday looking to rebound.

The Girls Basketball Team traveled to New Palestine for an HHC rival game. The girls have not beaten New Palestine since the 2012-2013 season and were looking to bring their HHC record to 1-1. The Golden Bears led 10-7 after the first quarter and took a 19-15 half time lead into the locker room. The Golden Bears maintained the lead throughout the third quarter but ended the quarter up only one leading 26 to 25. An 11-2 fourth quarter run put the Bears up 37-27 with 2:20 to play. The Golden Bears sulked away the remaining 2:20 to claim a massive HHC win 39-29 and move to 1-1 in the HHC and 6-4 overall. Shelbyville had seven players score and senior Madison Bassett led the way with 11 points. Three players contributed 7 points, Kylee Edwards, Ava Wilson, and Madison Phares. Abby Brenner had 3, Cheyenne Eads and Ellie Simpson rounded out the scoring with 2 points each. Abby Brenner and Ellie Simpson shared the “Game Changer Award”. The JV team defeated New Palestine to move to 8-1 on the year. The JV will travel to New Castle on Thursday for a JV double header with the boys starting at 6 pm. The Varsity will host New Castle for a varsity double header and “PINK Out” on Friday with the Girls starting at 6 pm and the Boys to follow.

@ Franklin County

The Girls Basketball Team traveled to Franklin County on Friday night for a non conference showdown with the Wildcats. The Golden Bears used a 12-5 second quarter to build a 21-14 halftime lead. The Golden Bears fought off the home Wildcats in the second half to pick up a 36-32 win to move to 5-3 on the year. Senior Madison Phares led the way for the Golden Bears with 15 points. Senior Madison Bassett scored 6, Kylee Edwards scored 5, Abby Brenner 4, and Cheyenne Eads had 2 points. Madison Phares was awarded the “Game Changer” award for the Golden Bears. The JV team was defeated for the first time this year to move to 6-1.

@ Batesville

The Girls Basketball Team was back on the road Saturday morning to face Batesville. Batesville used a 12-4 first quarter to jump on the Golden Bears coming off a game on Friday night. The Bears used a great second quarter to trail 14-11 at the half. Again Batesville came out of the halftime locker room ready to play and build a 24-15 lead heading into the final quarter. Shelbyville again came back to tie the game at 26 all with just over five minutes left. Batesville used a 7-2 run to take a 33-28 lead with 2:43 to play. The Golden Bears could never get any closer with the final being 41-32 Batesville. Shelbyville moves to 5-4 on the year. Kylee Edwards led the way with 19 points. Ava Wilson had 9, Madison Bassett had 6, and Madison Phares rounded out the scoring for Shelbyville with 1 point. The JV team bounced back to pick up a win to move to 7-1 on the year. Both teams will travel to New Palestine on Tuesday with basketball starting at 6 pm.

The Girls Basketball team hosted HHC foe Pendleton Heights on Saturday afternoon. The varsity team was defeated to move to 4-3 and 1-1 in the HHC. Ava Wilson led the way with 18 points. Senior Madison Phares had 17, Kylee Edwards and Abby Brenner both had 8, and Senior Madison Bassett had 4 points. The JV team was victorious in a thriller 32-30 to move to 6-0 on the year. Both teams will travel to Franklin County on Friday night with basketball starting at 6 pm. The Girls will travel to Batesville on Saturday as well with basketball starting at 12 pm.
