El Camino Acts AS Spoiler in 9-6 win over LCC

Posted by Ruth Stoffel on May 11 2001 at 05:00PM PDT
El Camino stayed close and then beat La Costa Canyon 9-6 in 10 innings to drop the Mavericks out of first place in the Avocado League race. The Wildcats 3-20, 2-10 took a 5-4 lead with 3 unearned runs in the top of the 6th inning. The Mavericks tied the game in the bottom of the 6th. In the 8th inning El Camino took a 1 run lead but Chapelone got his second rbi on a sac fly in the bottom of the 8th. In the bottom of the 9th the Mavericks left the bases loaded. Brehm started and pitched 5 strong innings, Burns came in and pitched 3 innings, yielding only 1 earned run. With Burns out of innings the Mavericks looked to Freshmen call up Michael Kenney who pitched a scoreless 9th but in the 10th inning gave up a scratch single for one run and a double for 2 more before getting out of the jam. The Mavericks have two games remaining, Tues at El Camino and Thursday at home against San Marcos. Fallbrook hosts El Camino on Thursday for their final game of the year and a win would clinch the Avocado League title by one half game over the Mavericks. Wins over El Camino and San Marcos would help LCC with the CIF seeding committee.
