Posted by Ruth Stoffel on May 07 2002 at 05:00PM PDT
Paul Oseguera's Grand Slam Home Run in the bottom of the 7th inning scored Eddie Signaigo with the winning run as the Mavericks beat Carlsbad 6-2. Tyler Ryan allowed only 2 runs while striking out 6 in upping his personal record to 8-0. Having already clinched the outright Avocado League Championship the Mavs (11-0,24-4)look to solidify their hold on one of the four seeds for the CIF Playoffs. In the second inning Oseguera and Stoffel hit back to back singles. Oseguera went to 3rd on a passed ball and scored on a throwing error. Stoffel then scored on Signaigo's rbi single. In the bottom of the 7th Signaigo led off with a double down the left field line, and Andrew Nacario laid down an excellent sacrafice bunt to move Signaigo to third. Lee-Lauduski was relieved by the left hander Cantabrana who then walked Sterk and Burke intentionally to face the left handed hitting Chapelone. The initial move worked as Cantabrana got Chapelone on strikes only to bring up Oseguera. The left handed hitting Oseguera drilled one over 400 ft to the deepest part of the ball park to win the game in regulation. With Fuller resting a bruised right eye Signaigo started in left, Stoffel moved to right field, and Sterk filled in at 2nd. Sterk started one 4-6-3 double play and ranged to his left to get one and throw to T. Ryan hustling to cover the bag at first. Brian Lee-Lauduski(0-6) pitched a strong 6 & 1/3 innings for Carlsbad (3-8,8-15) and hit a double in the 5th inning to scored two runs and tie the game at 2-2.
