News and Announcements

Never a dull moment with these boys! That was one of those games where I really felt all along we were going to get it done – they were just consistently chipping away after that 1st inning and then exploded in the 6th!

1 win away from the finals!

I’ve scheduled an hour at Frozen Ropes (10710 Thornmint Rd) at 4:30 tomorrow. Will be fun to do something different and focus on driving the ball and staying back – last time we played the Angels we were swinging early and hitting everything off the end of the bat.

Asking everyone to chip in $5 for the rental. There’s a chance I may not be there (we’ll see how well the double doses of Nyquil does for me tonight) but I’ve confirmed the other coaches will be there .

All Star Registration

Posted by Shawn Castleberry at May 10, 2018 9:44AM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Hi Parents,

What a year we’re having! While we would all love to be undefeated, these boys have certainly earned the “Comeback Kings” title! If we forget about that makeup inning (which I do), we’re 6-1 this season in 1 run games – truly amazing!

I wanted to reach out personally when it comes to All-Stars, as many of you haven’t had this come up before . My older son was an All-Star both seasons he was eligible, and I was fortunate enough to have coached one of those teams. I can say without a doubt it’s a GREAT experience. District umpires for every game, quality play, and there are actually some other coaches that are ALMOST as loud as I am!

Things to consider :

  • June becomes baseball and that’s about it. Practices will be most days. Kids love that, but if you have vacations already booked, it makes it tough.
  • Game schedule . Solely dependent on wins and losses. Could have games on back to back days, Sundays, you never know. From what I’ve heard, the longest trip for this year’s District games is to Escondido. Now if they keep winning, ANYTHING is possible!
  • Playing time. Completely different rules. I won’t bore you with the details, but on larger teams the only requirement is 1 at bat. That rarely happens, but it’s important to know.

Anyway , here’s my pitch – if your son likes the game and you’re not going to be gone , register him, even if you’re not sure he’s “All-Star worthy.” Every year there are kids who ARE All-Stars that are out of town, opening a spot. All those extra practices really help the boys learn some very important drills that, frankly, there isn’t time for during the regular season. They’ll need this knowledge by the time they get to Majors.

Of course, not everybody who registers is going to make it, but I’d love to see a whole lot of Astros out there getting some extra reps and bringing that never say die attitude to Poway’s All-Stars!

Deadline to register is Monday, May 14th.

See you all Saturday!

All,

2 things.

1. I will not be at practice tomorrow but Coach Buzz and Coach Nathan have it all handled (although extra hands are always welcome!)

2. One area of improvement we need to work on is sliding so the last 30 minutes of practice we’re going to work on that – using a tarp and water! This’ll make it not only fun, but also take away some of the fears a few of the boys have. Once they learn the technique, sliding on dirt isn’t much different! Should be a great time (and potential photo ops!)

You may want to bring a change of clothes or a towel for the ride home!

Thanks

Please confirm attendance

All,

We have a player that may not be able to make it tonight, leaving us with only 9 healthy bodies. Please let me know ASAP if your son is not able to make it to tonight’s game – I need as much time as possible to line up a pool player.

Thanks,

Shortened Practice today - ends at 6pm

Due to the unexpected National Championship appearance of my Wolverines tonight, we’re going to be wrapping up at 6.

The 1st third of the season has definitely not gone as expected, but I am very encouraged by what I saw the last couple of games; we’re finally getting more aggressive at the plate.

Good things ahead for these boys!
