KC 14y/os ONE WIN AWAY FROM DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP

Posted by Valerie Borski on Jul 14 2002 at 05:00PM PDT
Kyle Chapman defeated host Montgomery County 14-1 Sunday evening to move within one win of the District 1 championship. They will play Monday, July 15th at 8:30 p.m. and will win the District 1 championship if they win the game. KC again received strong pitching from Eddrick Gilmore, Jeremy Gould, and Alex Atherton limiting Montgomery County to one unearned run. KC's pitchers have yet to yield an earned run in the tournament. Gilmore, who pitched two strong innings Saturday, started for KC and pitched the first three innings allowing no hits and striking out five. Gould pitched the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings allowing two hits and striking out 5. Atherton pitched the seventh inning, giving up no hits, and striking out 2. KC scored five of their runs in the top of the 7th inning to dash any hopes that Montgomery County had. In the 7th inning, Ray Redding hit a two-run home run, Nick Wills had a triple, and Ross Haggard and Jeremy Gould added doubles. In addition to the strong pitching and hitting, KC played errorless ball with Braylon Moore and Ryan Swindell making outstanding plays in the field. KC is now the only undefeated team in the tournament. If they don't win Monday, they will return to play on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. for the championship. Their Monday opponent will be the team that wins Monday's 6:00 p.m. game--------probably a rematch with Brazos Valley, who they beat Friday 6-1. This is an excellent team and deserves the support of each of us. See you in Magnolia Monday. 13-Year old News: NASA was the winner in the Greater Houston area for the 13-year old championship, and Pasadena was the second place team. Both teams are in Austin to play in the state tournament, and both teams won their first game by the 10-run rule. Brent Patterson Directions to the Montgomery County Field: Take Loop 610 to Hwy 290.
