ELYRIA — Desperate may be too strong a word, but someone had to win for the first time this year Friday night at Ely Stadium. “You ain’t kidding, man,” coach Mark Pinzone said after his Brunswick football team demolished Elyria 31-0 in Greater Cleveland Conference play. “I’m happy for our kids. They’ve worked so hard every week, every day. It’s been six long weeks here. It’s been pretty tough.”

The Blue Devils found holes in the defense, running for more than 300 yards with sophomore Jacob Scherette and senior Dakota Lavinder each going over the century mark. “It feels really nice to get our first win,” Scherette said. “We worked hard in practice all week. We stuck together the whole year, and it’s finally paying off. It’s a momentum booster and helps us get ready for the next few weeks.”

Scherette seemed to give the team a huge lift running from his quarterback position. He scored three times and piled up 131 yards on just 13 carries. Lavinder had 125 on 14 tries. “It’s kind of our big-man formation,” Scherette said of Brunswick’s version of the wildcat. “Offensive line did a great job. I’m very proud of them.”

Defensively, Brunswick (1-6, 1-3) did enough to get the shutout. Elyria (0-7, 0-4) couldn’t sustain anything on the ground and its air attack was sporadic at best. “They earned the victory,” Pinzone said of his team. “We got the job done. Winning always feels better. I sure hope this gives us that little push to play better and compete. We still have some tough games. We’ve got Euclid, Medina and Strongsville. We’re going to work hard and try to win.”

The Blue Devils took control with an 11-play, 76-yard drive. Lavinder’s 23-yard sprint around end got the touchdown, with Justin Hagler kicking the point after with 9:10 left in the first half. Hagler added a 34-yard field goal following a fumble recovery by Edward Sevastos. The Blue Devils led 10-0 at the half and virtually put the game away with a 13-play, 62-yard drive to start the second half.

Brunswick was aided by a roughing the kicker call when Hagler attempted a field goal from 47 yards, and Scherette scored from the 4. He added two more scores and started the running clock with 6:18 to play.

The Pioneers drove to the 22 late in the first quarter, but big plays by Curtis Helman and Matthew Stupka stymied Elyria, which turned the ball over on downs at the 24. Later, with Brunswick leading 24-0, the Pioneers had a first down at the Brunswick 25, but a series of bad plays and a 20-yard loss on a bad shotgun snap sealed the shutout.
