GAME SUMMARY: Elmwood edges Printworld in extra innings to earn playoff win.

Elmwood and Printworld opened the Wickford Little League 2009 playoff season with an action packed, seven inning thriller.  Ryan Smith and Danny Hayden pitched 5 2/3 super innings each, before giving way to the 85 pitch limit – neither pitcher earned a decision in the 5-4 Elmwood victory.  Smith allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits and recorded 7 Ks.  Hayden allowed 4 (3 earned) on 5 hits and recorded 8 Ks.  Elmwood opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first.  Cam Moniz lead off the game with a double, Matt Boelter drew a six pitch walk and Danny Hayden cleared the bases with a triple down the left field line.  Matt Gauthier then singled driving Hayden home for the final run of the inning and giving Elmwood the 3-0 lead.  Printworld bounced back, scoring one run in the top of the second when Andrew Sarazen reached on a fielder’s choice, stole third and scored on an errant throw.  Printworld plated two more runs in the top of the third on three hits by Brandon Fain, Lucas Deslauriers, and Jake Brogno tying the game at 3 apiece.  Elmwood scored the go ahead run in the bottom of the third when Tyler Carter reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and was driven home on an RBI single by Liam Darcy, bringing the score to 4-3.  Smith and Hayden pitched scoreless fourth and fifth innings and a gamey Printworld come to bat in the top of the sixth.  Elmwood recorded the first out of the inning bringing Tanner Lindsay to the plate.  Lindsay jumped on a high fastball and drove it over the right center field fence tying the game at 4-4.  Elmwood settled down and came in to bat in the bottom of the sixth looking for the win.  Elmwood loaded the bases with two outs and on a 3-2 count, Tanner Lindsay, on in relief of Ryan Smith, reared back struck out the sixth batter of the inning to end the threat.    Matt Boelter, the eventual winner and on in relief of Danny Hayden, handled the Printworld lineup in the top of the seventh with relative ease.  Elmwood came to bat in the bottom of the seventh and Matt Boelter drew a lead-off walk.  Hayden followed with a single to left leaving first and second with no outs.  Matt Gauthier drove a sinking liner to left center and a sliding catch by Anthony Caranci in the gap saved the run and the game for Printworld.  Tyler Carter then singled to load the bases with one out.  Lindsay once again dug deep striking out the next batter handing Elmwood one last chance to win the game.  Lindsay fought Liam Darcy to a 2-2 count and once again dug deep, reared back and threw a fastball that popped loose from the catcher and Matt Boelter slid into home, on an extremely close call, earning Elmwood the hard-fought victory in one of the most exciting games played at Wilson Park this season.
