Dixon, Big Inning Power Yanks

Posted by Jim Morrison on May 27 2010 at 05:00PM PDT

Ryan Dixon was the star on the mound and at the plate as the Yankees defeated the Nationals 8-5 Monday night. Dixon was aided by final inning heroics from Alex Duvall, who caught a fly to left, and Dakota Combs, who came in to get the final two outs.

The Bombers scored all their runs in a marathon 68-pitch third inning that featured a dozen batters, five hits, and four walks. Jack Broach opened the frame with a single and raced to second on a wild pitch before Ryan Dixon singled, scoring him.

Danny DeSmit and Matthew Baswell walked to load the bases before Joe Morrison chopped a full-count pitch to shortstop and beat the throw to first base, scoring a run. Dakota Combs walked to force in a run before the inning's first out. After a force for the second out, Antonio Howard walked to score a run. Jack singled again before Ryan Dixon cleared the bases with a ringing triple into the right-center field gap.

Dixon aurrendered a couple of hits and there were a couple of miscues behind him to score three in the first inning, but he came back to strike out two batters with the bases loaded to get out of the jam. For the game, he whiffed five.

Combs came in with a runner on base in the fifth and final inning. Duvall caught a high fly to left for the second out before Dakota struck out a batter with a full count to end the game.
