SDCLA ANNOUNCES MORE RESTRICTIVE GEOGRAPHIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT FOR PLAYERS

Posted by Steven Whitman on Jan 21 2016 at 04:00PM PST

The SDCLA adopted the following more restrictive geographic player eligibility requirement at its annual league meeting held January 21, 2016.

If a player cannot or does not want to play for the team associated with where he goes to school or where he lives, then he can request to play with the team that is geographically closest to where he would have played. It will not be based on where someone plans to go to school in an upcoming year. Representatives for both programs will need to agree and then it will need the commissioner’s approval. The commissioner’s approval will be based on the merits. There will be no grandfathering of circumstances or understandings that existed in 2015.

Players just wanting to play for a better team will be frowned upon. Players wanting to play for a less skilled team in a circumstance where he is likely to get less playing time for the team where he lives may be approved.

The SDCLA middle school league is focused on community based lacrosse programs. There are plenty of travel teams available in all areas of San Diego that players can participate in outside of the league season to their satisfy desire to play at a higher level than offered by their community team.

Prior to this rule change, the league had historically allowed players to play for teams other than the teams associated with where they attend school or where they live if the coaches from both teams agreed.
