Merchants Marchesi Handcuffs Chiefs, 6-0

Posted by Chiefs Baseball at Aug 1, 2006 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Wakefield- Righty Jarrod Marchesi twirled a neat two hitter as the Merchants beat the Chiefs 6-0 at Walsh Field on Wednesday night.

The former Everett High star, who now pitches at Bentley College, retired the first 15 Chiefs in a row before yielding a sixth inning single to Matt Boleski.

The Chiefs Mike DiCato desreved a much better fate, allowing just five hits and three earned runs. DiCato struck out five and walked just two.

The Chiefs complete the home and home series with the Merchants at Playstead on Thursday night at 6:00 PM. Righty Mike Chandler (Hamilton, MA, Merrimack College) will be the starter for the Chiefs. The Merchants, looking to firm up a playoff spot, are expected to counter with veteran Chicago Cubs farmhand Steve Coffey.

Watertown-Eighteen year old Jared Freni picked up his second win in as many starts and his teammates backed him up with a ten hit attack, including five doubles, as the Chiefs knocked off the second place Reds 7-5 at sultry Victory Field on Monday night.

Freni, the former Malden Catholic star who is UMass-Amherst bound this fall, worked six full innings before giving way to Mike DiCato and Jeff DeCarlo who preserved his win in the seventh.

After Reds starter Joe Chiodo set the Chiefs down in the top of the first, Watertown jumped out to 2-0 in the bottom of the inning. Luke Begley led off with a single. Will Bissonnette flew to left for the first out and Freni got Brian Shapiro striking out swinging as Begley stole second. Matt McEvoy then singled to right scoring Begley for a 1-0 Reds lead. Freni then issued three consecutive walks that forced home McEvoy for a 2-0 Watertown lead.

It stayed that way until the Chiefs cut the margin in half in the top of the third. Doug Heald got things going when he singled to right. Matt Boleski moved him up a base with a sacrifice bunt. Jimmy Buldini delivered Heald with a long RBI double to left center. DiCato then drew a walk and Justin Crisafulli was hit by a pitch to load the bases for cleanup man Mike Andre.
The Chiefs looked as if they were going to take the lead but Chiodo escaped the jam when Andre's hard liner was stabbed by shortstop Bissonnette who doubled up DiCato at second.

Freni left Brendan Eygabroat (two out double) stranded at secondbse in the Reds third when he struck out Ben Chang swinging .

The Chiefs came up with one of their biggest innings of the year in the top of the fourth when they put up a half dozen runs to take a 7-2 lead. Chiodo got Jeff DeCarlo to pop up for the first out. Catcher Rob Noe (St. John's Prep) sparked the big inning when he drilled the first hit of ICL career, a long double to left. Phil Costello then drew a walk. Rich Montecalvo then delivered the second double of the inning to rightcenter scoring Noe to knot the game at two. Chiodo came up temporarily large when he struck out Heald swinging with runners on second and third for the second out of the inning. The Chiefs then caught a huge break when the usually sure handed Begley bobbled Boleski's apparent inning ending grounder to second which allowed Costello to score and give the Chiefs a 3-2 lead. Buldini then made it hurt when he roped a single to left scoring Montecalvo to make it 4-2. DiCato then singled sharply to center scoring Montecalvo to run the lead to 5-2. Crisafulli unloaded on a Chiodo fastball and drilled it to deep center for the inning's third double and a 7-2 Chiefs lead. Brain Shapiro replaced Chiodo and walked Andre before getting DeCarlo to fly to deep left to end the inning.

Freni worked an easy bottom of the fourth and Shapiro worked a 1-2-3 top of the fifth.

The Reds came up with two runs off Freni in the bottom of the fifth and threatened for more before the big righty settled down and got out of a major league bases loaded jam.
Shapiro and McEvoy led the inning off with two sharp singles. Dan Chaisson then drew a walk that loaded the bases with nobody out. Freni then walked Eygabroat that forced in a run cutting the Chiefs lead to 7-3. Chang singled to center scoring McEvoy making it 7-4, still with the bases loaded and still nobody out. That's where Freni, who led EMass this past spring with 119 strikeouts, bulled his neck and struck out both John Lynch and Dave Wang and got Begley to ground to Andre at third to keep the Chiefs lead intact.

Shapiro escaped a Chiefs threat in the sixth when Heald reached on an error and went to third when Boleski doubled into the right field corner. The Chiefs then botched a suicide bunt attempt with Buldini at the plate and Heald was tagged out. Buldini eventually struck out but DiCato followed with his second single of the night to center that moved Boleski to third. Shapiro then got Crisafulli to line sharply to short to end the inning.

A McEvoy single was all that the Reds could muster against Freni in the sixth and the Chiefs threatened to add to their lead in the top of the seventh. Andre led things off with a line single to center off Reds reliever Aram Manoukian. The righty then struck out DeCarlo and Noe followed by drawing a walk. Costello then lined sharply to right where Wang made a nice running catch and doubled Noe off first to end the inning.

The Reds did not go quietly in the seventh. DiCato came on in relief of Freni and walked Eygabroat on four "extremely close" pitches. He then hit Chang to put runners at first and second with nobody out. DeCarlo came on to pitch to Lynch and got him to pop up to Heald at second for out number one. Wang then singled to right scoring Eygabroat to make it a 7-5 lead. That was all the Reds were to get as DeCarlo got Begley to fly to center and Bissonnette to ground to third to notch his first save of the year and end the game.

Chiefs Notebook....Freni threw 120 pitches striking out six and walking six. He allowed eight hits in his six innings of work.....Boleski broke out of a season long slump with a sharp double to right in the sixth. He also had a sacrifice bunt and reached on an error.....The seven inning game was the longest that the Chiefs have played this season taking two hours and forty three minutes to complete.....
Intercity All-Stars Hit Boston Park League with Loss BOSTON HERALD Monday, July 24, 2006 WAKEFIELD - Intercity League All-Star head coach Rick DeAngelis committed the unthinkable at the conclusion of his squad’s 4-1 victory over the Boston Park League All-Stars yesterday at Walsh Field. The veteran skipper, who also manages two-time ICL champion Lexington, was cheering on Tim Dempsey of the Cassell Club, one of the Blue Sox’ foes. “It was a bit strange to be cheering on a rival,” DeAngelis said. “But it is easy to root for this team because it was a real privilege for me to coach these guys.” Shut out for eight innings, the BPL mounted a threat in the top of the ninth against ICL pitcher Brian Shapiro (Watertown Reds). With no outs, reserve Evan Targugno (Stockyard) reached second after ICL committed its only error of the game. A.J. Turner (Mass. Envelope) followed with a single to center, putting runners at the corners. Matt Moyen’s (Mass. Envelope) RBI groundout then cut BPL’s deficit to 4-1. The ICL could have done additional damage, but, with two men aboard, Jim Pierce (ADSL) watched Dempsey run down his deep shot to center. Turner attempted to tag up, but Dempsey gunned the ball to catcher Matt Fiore (Mooney Dental), who applied the tag for a game-ending double play. “It is nice to end on an upbeat play like that,” DeAngelis said. It was fitting that DeAngelis’ crew ignited ICL’s offense. Bill Cooke (Blue Sox) surrendered a leadoff single to Brandon Cody (Padres) in the first before inducing three straight fly balls to get out of the frame. In the bottom of the second, Dan Powers (Lexington) walked and moved to second on a single by Jesse Bruinsma (Gately). Starting catcher Eric Poling (Lexington) then mashed a 1-2 offering from Frank Emery (Mass. Envelope) to center, scoring Powers to give ICL the 1-0 lead. In the third, Jake Dillard (Lexington) cranked a double to deep left and then motored his way into third on the first of two BPL errors. He scored on Josh Klimkiewicz’s (Casell) RBI groundout to stretch ICL’s lead to 2-0. In the sixth, BPL threatened. After Turner led things off with a bunt single, Pierce pulverized an offering from Derek Cotonis (Gately) only to watch the pitcher snag the ball on its way back up the middle and then doubled up Turner. “We came out aggressive, but I think that we missed some opportunities,” BPL manager/designated hitter Steve Busby said. “It was a well-pitched game and I thought that we did hit the ball hard early.” ICL tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth. Jamie Gath (Gately) reached on a batter’s interference call and then back-to-back singles by Jeff Paquette (Cassell) and Dan Hughes (Lexington) loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly by Mike Andre (Andre Chiefs) scored Gath and then Paquette scooted home on a passed ball to make it a 4-0 game.
By Bruce Hack Lexington Blue Sox Director of Media Relations WAKEFIELD – All-Star games feature the best of the best and fans expect to see exceptional performances. The fans who witnessed the best of the Boston Park League square off against the best of the Intercity League at Wakefield on Sunday afternoon were not disappointed as the host Intercity team came away with a 4-1 win. In the renewal of an annual summer event, the ICL players used timely hitting, quality pitching and great defense to come away with the win over their brethren from the city. The Intercity League struck first in the bottom of the second. With one out Dan Powers (Lexington/Holy Cross) walked. After a fly out he moved to second on John Welch’s (Medford/St. Anselm) single. Powers scored when Lexington teammate Eric Poling (Greenville College) singled to center and the home team was up 1-0. The hosts, who were guided by Lexington manager Rick DeAngelis, scored again in the third when Lexington leadoff hitter Jake Dillard (Southwestern Oklahoma) doubled down the leftfield line and went to third on a throwing error by Jamie Dahill (Irish Village/St. Anselm). After an infield out held Dillard at third, Josh Klimkiewicz (Cassell/Harvard), second in the ICL with 19 RBI, drove in Dillard on a ground out to first. Both teams had runners on in every inning until the Park League’s Jay Turner (Stockyard/UMass-Boston) turned in a 1-2-3 fourth inning for his manager, Steve Busby who managed the BLP team. The Intercity League’s Aram Manoukian (Watertown/Bentley) followed Turner’s lead and set down the Park League in order in the fifth including striking out of Bill Andruskevich (Towne Club/Holy Cross). Both starting shortstops showed their defensive talent early in the game. The BPL Dorian Rojas (Carlson Club/Cumberland) made a great stop and tossed out Klimkiewicz at second in the first inning. Zach Golden (Cassell/Brandeis) stretched to take a throw from Klimkiewicz and get a force out at second. Great defense was not limited to the shortstops. Derek Cotoni (Gately/Bridgeport) helped himself in the sixth when he turned a line drive off the bat of Jim Pierce (ADSL/Thomas) into a double play. The Intercity League scored its final two runs in the sixth when they loaded the bases. Jamie Gath (Gately/Bentley) reached on catcher’s interference and consecutive singles by Jeff Paquette (Cassell/Fitchburg St.) and Dan Hughes (Lexington/Brown) put three ICL players on with no outs. After a strikeout, Mike Andre (Andre Chiefs/Merrimack) drove in Gath with a deep drive to right for a sacrifice fly. Paquette scored the fourth run when he came home on a passed ball. Solid pitching by the Intercity League kept the Park League off the scoreboard until the ninth. The eight hurlers scattered five hits, walked one and struck out five. Lexington’s Ben Simon (Providence, RI/Tufts), 2-1 with a 0.41 ERA, earned the win by pitching the second inning and striking out two. The Park League broke through in the ninth when Evan Tardugno (Stockyard/UMass-Boston) reached on an error to start off the inning. A. J. Turner (Mass Envelope/Eastern Nazarene) had his second hit of the game, the only player to get two hits in the game, to put runners at first and third. Turner stole second putting both runners in scoring position. Tardugno scored on Matt Moyen’s (Mass Envelope/Wentworth) infield out to make it 4-1. Jim Pierce hit a sinking line drive o center that Tim Dempsey (Cassell/UMass-Lowell) made the catch on and then threw a perfect strike to catcher Matt Fiore (Mooney Dental/WPI) to retire Turner at the plate and end the game. Pierce had two at bats in the game and made four outs hitting into double plays both times up. Both teams had outstanding plays and players, but two were recognized as “best-of-the best”. For the Park League A. J. Turner earned outstanding hitter as he went 2-for-2. The Intercity League’s Jake Dillard earned the same award for his league. Dillard had a double, the only extra-base hit of the game, and scored a run. Medford Based Players Shine in ICL All-Star Game All-Stars representing the Andre Chiefs and the Medford Americans performed very well in Sunday’s Intercity League’s win over the Boston Park League at Wakefield. Medford Americans John Welch (Medford/St. Anselm) and Ryan Maguire (Arlington/Marist) both had singles for the ICL. Lefty Jeff Keefe (Arlington/St. Anselm), who had a no-hitter earlier this year, pitched a scoreless fourth inning. Chiefs third baseman Mike Andre (Medford/Merrimack) hit the longest ball of the day, a long RBI sacrifice fly to deep right, that scored the Intercity League’s third run in the sixth inning. Welch moved into second place in the ICL home run category when he hit his third of the season against Woburn on Saturday in the Americans 7-1 win at Ferullo Field. He is hitting .278 with eight RBI’s on the season. Andre moved into the third spot last week in the ICL’s batting race, raising his average to a lofty .424, (25 for 59) with one home run. His 12 RBI’s put him in fifth place among the league leaders in that department. Freni Leads Chiefs to 6-5 Win in ICL Debut

Posted by Chiefs Baseball at Jul 18, 2006 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Wakefield- A pair of former Malden Catholic aces teamed up on the mound to lead the Chiefs to a 6-5 win over the Merchants at Walsh Field on Wednesday night.

Jared Freni picked up the win in his Intercity debut going 5.1 innings before handing the ball to his old Lancer teammate Mike DiCato. DiCato picked up the save with some hard nosed pitching in the both the sixth and seventh innings and preserve Freni's first win.

On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, Freni was matched up against former Chicago Cub farmhand Steve Coffey, twenty years his senior, who has made over one hundred starts for the Merchants since 1991. The veteran fireballer retired the Chiefs in order in the first.

Freni started his ICL career by getting L.J. DiMaino to pop out to Doug Heald at second base. T.J. Sheedy grounded to short, Brown shortstop Rob Pappenhouse singled and Freni recorded his first ICL strikeout by getting catcher Mike Sorrentino looking to end the inning.

The Chiefs picked up a run off Coffey in the top of the second when Jeff DeCarlo singled and went to second on a passed ball. DiCato, who started the game at first base, then delivered the former St. John's star with a double to left giving the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.

Wakefield picked up an unearned run that tied the game in the bottom of the second. Freni got Chad Dwyer to fly to left and struck out Dana Dagostino for the inning's first two outs. Ageless veteran Andy Hartung, another former Chicago Cub product, reached on error by shortstop Rich Montecalvo. Freni then tried to pick Hartung off first but his throw sailed high allowing Hartung to go to second. Russo then lined a single to center scoring Hartung. Freni averted further trouble when he got Jeff Ericksen to fly to Jimmy Buldini in center.

Heald was hit by a Coffey pitch leading off the Chiefs third but Buldini flew out and Phil Costello bounced into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

In the Merchants third, DeMaino grounded to Heald at second, Sheedy singled and was thrown out attempting to steal second by catcher Sean O'Brein. Freni ended the frame when he got Pappenhouse to strike out swinging.

The Chiefs threatened but could not score in the fourth. Justin Crisafulli and Mike Andre both drew walks but Coffey escaped the jam when he got DeCarlo to fly to center and DiCato to hit into a tailor made 6-4-3 double play.

Freni set down the Merchants in order in the bottom of the fourth inning and the Chiefs responded with three big runs in the top of the fifth sending Coffey to the showers. O'Brien led off with a single to left. Coffey struck out Montecalvo for the first out of the inning but Heald kept things going with a single to right center. Buldini then got his second hit of the night to left that loaded the bases. Costello then hit a slow bouncer to Pappenhouse at short and he flipped to Sheedy at second but had no chance of completing the doubleplay which allowed O'Brien to score. Crisafulli followed with a sharp single to left that scored Heald making it 3-1 Chiefs. Andre followed with a line single to right that reloaded the bases. DeCarlo then singled to left that scored Costello for a 4-1 lead. Kevin Flight replaced Coffey and he got DiCato to ground to second to end the inning.

Buldini made a spectacular diving catch of a Sorrentino sinking liner for the first out of the fifth. Freni stayed tough and got Russo to ground Montecalvo and Ericksen to pop to Andre.

Flight retired the Chiefs 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth.

DeMaino led off the Wakefield sixth by dropping a bunt single. Sheedy followed with a sharp single to right putting runners at first and second with nobody out. Freni then showed why he led all of Eastern Mass. this past spring with 119 strikeouts in 81 innings, when he got Pappenhouse swinging with a fastball. Sorrentino then singled to center scoring DeMaino to cut the Chiefs lead to 4-2. Dwyer then singled to right scoring Sheedy to make it 4-3. Dagostino drew a walk to load the bases. DiCato replaced Freni and got Hartung to ground to Andre at third who threw home to force out Sorrentino. With the count 2-2 on Russo, Dwyer attempted to steal home but was tagged out by O'Brien.

The Chiefs picked up two big insurance runs in the seventh when Buldini walked, Costello beat out a bunt, Crisafulli singled to left to load the bases for Andre who singled to left center scoring Buldini for a 5-3 Chiefs lead. Jared Marchese came on to get DeCarlo swinging before DiCato hustled down the line to beat a double play relay that allowed Costello to score and make it 6-3 Chiefs.

Wakefield came up with two runs in the bottom of the seventh before DiCato slammed the door by getting Dwyer to bounce out to Heald to end the game.
