Reds Deal Chiefs a 7-2 Defeat

Posted by Chiefs Baseball on Jun 19 2006 at 05:00PM PDT in 2010 Season

Watertown- For the second time in two weeks, righthander Aram Manoukian held the Chiefs at bay for much of the night as the Watertown Reds beat the Chiefs 7-2 last night at Victory Field.

Chiefs starter Mike Coppinger (1-2) pitched fairly well, going five and one third innings before yielding to relievers Dean Corsi and Connor Bishop.

Watertown took a 3-0 lead in the second on singles by Matt McEvoy and Lee Jamieson sandwiched around a passed ball and a couple of infield errors. It went to 6-0 Reds in the fifth when three walks and a single to former Chief Brian Shapiro and a double to John Lynch (Villanova) accounted for three more Reds runs.

The Chiefs closed the gap to four runs in the sixth when Rich Monteclavo walked and Jeff DeCarlo beat out a bunt. Brian Macrina then hit a grounder to short that was thrown high to first allowing Montecalvo to score. After a pop up, Mike Andre plated DeCarlo to make it a 6-2 game. The Reds picked up another run in the sixth off of Corsi to make it 7-2 before Bishop worked out of a bases loaded jam.

The Chiefs went quietly in the seventh.

The Chiefs are right back in action tonight (Tuesday) when they host the Wakefield Merchants at Playstead Park at 6:00 PM.

Chiefs Smoke Signals....The Chiefs have a well rested staff with all of the recent rain and were undecided on a starter for Tuesday's game.Possible candidates could include Mike Lanciani, Mike Chandler, Connor Bishop or Mark Blake.....The Chiefs got a scare in the third inning when second baseman Doug Heald and centerfielder Brian Macrina collided in shallow center trying to run down a looper of the bat of Lee Jamieson. Both appeared okay although Macrina was experiencing some stiffness to the knee....A couple of Chiefs rookies saw their first ICL action against the Reds as Jeff DeCarlo and catcher Anthony Weiner both made their initial appearances of the season....
