Cooke & Lexington Outduel Coppinger & Chiefs, 2-0

Posted by Chiefs Baseball on Jul 07 2006 at 05:00PM PDT in 2010 Season
Lexington- The Chiefs could not take advantage of an outstanding pitching effort from righty Mike Coppinger and fell to the Blue Sox and veteran southpaw and former UMass-Amherst star Bill Cooke 2-0 under the lights last night at Lexington.

The Chiefs outhit the Sox 7-5 but were unable to break into the scoring column against Cooke, who has been one of the most consistent pitchers in the ICL over the last five years. Cooke went to a perfect 4-0 with the complete game win and lowered his ERA to 0.57.

Coppinger nearly matched Cooke pitch for pitch but the only two walks that he issued on the night came back to haunt him as they both scored.

Lexington took a 1-0 lead in the first when Jake Dillard (Southwest Oklahoma) walked, stole second and scored on a Sean McElroy single to center. The Sox increased their lead to 2-0 in the third when Danny Powers (Holy Cross) walked and scored when McElroy and Dan Hughes (Brown University) both singled.

Mike DiCato, .241 (UMass), Justin Crisafulli, .250 (Central Missouri State/Cleveland Indians) and Mike Andre, .395(Merrimack) had two hits apiece for the Chiefs. Jeff DeCarlo, .227(University of Michigan) added the seventh Chiefs hit, a second inning single.

Following a day off on Saturday, the Chiefs remain in Lexington for the weekend and will again play the Blue Sox on Sunday at 5:00 PM.

The Chiefs were undecided on their starting pitcher for Sunday's contest.
