Reds Deal Chiefs a Tough Loss, 1-0

Posted by Chiefs Baseball on Jul 17 2006 at 05:00PM PDT in 2010 Season
Medford- It was as tough of a loss as this young tribe of Chiefs have experienced this season.

The Chiefs outhit the Reds.
The Chiefs outpitched the Reds.
And the Chiefs even out defensed the Reds.

The only thing they didn't do was outscore the Reds.

The end result was a tough to take 1-0 loss at Playstead Park on Tuesday night.

Chiefs starter Mike Chandler wiggled his way out of several jams and kept the Chiefs in the ballgame working into the seventh inning. Chandler allowed only two hits but had some control issues walking a half dozen and hitting three others. He pulled enough escapes to keep it a 1-0 game into the seventh.

Chandler got out of a first and second, two out situation in the top of the first, and the Chiefs went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning against Reds starter Joe Chiodo.

Nothing doing for the Reds in the top of the second and Chiefs cleanup man Mike Andre got the Chiefs second off to a good start with a line single to right. Chiodo got Jeff DeCarlo to fly out and catcher Sean O'Brien to bounce into a 5-4-3 doubleplay.

The Reds scored their only run of the night in the top of the third. Luke Begley dropped a bunt single and Will Bissonnette walked. Jason Hoye then drilled a single to left scoring Begley and giving the Reds a 1-0 lead. Chandler escaped further damage when he got Matt McEvoy on a flyout, Brian Shapiro on groundout and John Lynch to pop up.

Chandler and Chiodo kept matching zeros until the Chiefs threatened in the sixth. After one out, Justin Crisafulli walked and Mark Blake pinch ran. Andre singled again to right but Chiodo got DeCarlo to line out to third for the second out. He then walked O'Brien on four pitches and gave way to reliever Brian Shapiro. The former Chiefs closer then struck out Rich Montecalvo looking with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Chandler gave up a leadoff walk in the seventh and was relieved by Mike DiCato. After a sacrifice bunt, an intentional walk to McEvoy and a single by Shapiro,  DiCato worked out of the bases loaded jam by striking out Brendan Eygabroat and getting Lynch on an infield grounder.

A Phil Costello pinch hit infield single is all the Chiefs could muster against Shapiro in the seventh.
