Welcome to the official home page of the Freedom Youth Rugby Club located in Sykesville / Eldersburg MD.
This site is provided to help coordinate information for our team, parents, coaches and supporters. The primary goal of the Freedom Fighters rugby program is to introduce young athletes to the game of rugby and have some summer fun. Freedom is part of the Potomac Rugby Union Youth League which is comprised of teams from the Baltimore, Washington and Northern Virginia suburbs. Most of our games are against teams in the local area. Read on for more information and review the "handouts" section to the left of the page. Should you have further questions, e-mail me at chriscarroll@remax.net.
Freedom Rugby Inclement Weather FAQ
- Do we practice in the rain? Rugby is a sport played in all sorts of conditions; rain, snow, ice and slush. Fortunately for us, we only have to deal with rain. In light of safety conditions, should it be raining on or between 6:30 - 8:00pm on practice nights, please meet at the pitch (what we call a rugby field) and be prepared to pick up your child.
- Do we practice in a light sprinkle? This is invigorating and healthy, so we don't fear light sprinkles UNLESS thunder is heard, or lightning observed. This is a cause for immediate stoppage of play. If you are not present for practice, please return immediately to pick up your child.
- What about if it has rained during the day but is dry now? Check the FARC weather hotline (below) first. We won't practice in dangerous turf conditions (sloppy conditions), but a soft pitch is a friendly pitch, so a little moisture won't hurt.
- Will we cancel because of excessive heat? The answer is yes, on a case by case basis.
WEATHER HOTLINE:Please take note of the Freedom Area Rec Council Weather Hotline. This hotline is for practices and home games ONLY (not away matches). The phone # is 410-549-6296, option 5. Save it to your mobile phones, please.
Frequently Asked Questions
Gang, Here is a list of Frequently Asked Questions and their answers.
1) Can my child play up/down in age group?
- Unfortunately the answer here is almost always "no". The exception would be if we didn't have enough kids to finish out a team and needed to add a few from the younger group. We count on our older kids in each bracket to provide leadership and a potentially higher level of atheleticism to our age brackets. Next year they will play with all their friends. Occasionally, we may have a U11 play on a U13 team at tournament time to finish out a side. We are able to do this because tournament rules allow a player to "play up" (never down), and the tournaments for U11 are on Saturday and U13 on Sunday, allowing a player to participate in both
2) When is the tournament?
- Beginning in 2012 it will be the first weekend containing an August Sunday.
3) Do we need special equipment?
- No special equipment is required. Cleats and a mouthpiece are recommended. Our uniform is a game jersey (wicking type material) that is included with your registration fee, and black shorts (not included).
4) Must I register online?
- Online registration saves us a TON of time from an accounting and reporting perspective, but if you cannot or will not register using a secure online site, you can find registration AND behavior forms in the "handouts" section. Please note, if registering manually, BOTH must be completed and given, along with registration fee, to the Program Administrator.
5) How "competitive" is this team
- Our primary focus is to introduce Rugby 7's to a new audience. We don't "cut" and we don't care if you are the most atheletic or the least atheletic person on the field, so long as you enjoy our sport and are willing to learn. We are a summer program and work around vacation, and are probably one of the most laid back sports programs you have experienced. That said, every year, we rank among the most talented programs in our league and have successful tournaments.
