Congratulations to Coach Davis on his award and his retirement!!
Danville, CA July 11, 2016 Monte Vista Cross Country is proud to announce that retired Coach Mike Davis was recently honored with a statewide coaching award. On
Saturday, June 18, in Fresno, the California Coaches Association
presented its "Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year" Award to former
Monte Vista cross country head coach Mike Davis. The California Coaches
Association brings together coaches from all sports from among the more
than 2,500 high schools in the state. Each year, through a nomination
process, the association selects just one outstanding coach in each
girls and boys sport to receive the award.
The
award is a fitting tribute and honor for Coach Davis and serves as a
crowning achievement for his years as head coach. In his final season as
head coach, Coach Davis led the Mustangs to the 2015 East Bay Athletic
League and North Coast Section titles.
Coach
Davis has made considerable contributions to Monte Vista cross country
over the course of 17 years. When his son first ran for the team in
1999, Coach Davis became involved as a parent volunteer and the team's
liaison to the athletic boosters organization. Coach Davis was
instrumental in spearheading the Track/Field/Snack Shack project
alongside two other booster volunteers in 2001-2003. In 2003-2004, Mike
and his wife Karla served as team parents for both cross country and
track. Finally in the fall of 2004, Mike was bitten by the coaching bug.
Coach Mike Huntsman mentored Coach Davis for a few years, turning the
reigns over to Coach Davis as head coach in 2007. During Coach Davis' 9
seasons as head coach, his teams won six North Coast Section titles,
with one
runner-up and three third place finishes. Three times the team finished
in
the top 10 at the State Meet in Division 1. In track, Coach Davis
coached athletes to school records in the boys 800 and 1600, and the
girls 1600 and 3200, in addition to numerous top-ten all time marks.
One
of coach Davis' proudest achievements are the traditions that he either
built upon or started outright. Going to running camp, the alumni
race, continuing the overnight relay, the team web site, the Mt. SAC
trip, Yogurt Shack runs, bad joke Fridays...are all traditions that
have become the cornerstone of the MVXC experience. Coach Davis, who
retired after the 2015 cross country season, remains active as a "coach
emeritus" helping out with both the track and cross country teams in an
advisory role.
On
August 6, Monte Vista alumni and fans are invited to join in a
celebration of Coach Davis' epoch as MVXC coach at Oak Hill Park
immediately following the annual alumni run. The retirement party will
be a casual potluck brunch/picnic. For more information about the Monte
