VIOLET THROUGH ON PENS IN GA CUP TIE

Posted by Roy Gill at Nov 7, 2014 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

MONTROSE ROSELEA v DUNDEE VIOLET

GA CUP 1st ROUND
SAT NOV 8th 2014

Roselea entertained Violet in a GA Cup 1st Round tie after disposing of Arbroath Vics in the Preliminary Round. Both sides were on form with Roselea on a run of four straight wins. Manager Ralph Brand was away running a half Marathon for Charity so Steve Kerrigan stepped in to take the team. They also used the match to give several players a game who had not featured regularly. Michael Cruikshank was missing through work.

The Broomfield Park surface was in immaculate condition for the first of a run of four games to be played on it in the coming weeks and there was a light breeze making it a very cold day for the watching fans.

Roselea: Mcleod, P Taylor, Findlater, Whyte, Thomson, Rae, Smith, Collier, Mitchell, Watson & Reid. Subs: R Taylor, Bailey, McDowell, Reoch & Tringham.

Roselea got off to a flying start with a goal in just 40 seconds. Watson played a great diagonal ball over to Mitchell and COLLIER turned his cross into the net for a perfect start.

In 3 minutes Violet had a half chance when Mair go to the bye line but Wilson scooped over the top.

It was 2-0 to the home side in 6 minutes with another fine goal again created by Calum Watson. He dragged the ball down the left hand side and crossed with his left for Dale REID to power a header into the corner of the net.

With 14 minutes on the clock Whyte had to block after a scramble in the box. Violet were coming more into the game and created further chances however the best was a back header from Wilson which did not trouble Mcleod.

Calum Cox was first to see yellow in 20 minutes when he brought Reid of Roselea down.

Roselea were back on top and Violet keeper Thain had to block a Rae shot after he palmed a Mitchell cross into the path of the Roselea midfielder in 26 minutes. Whyte from a corner and Colllier with a 30 yard left footed drive tested the Violet keeper.

There was a let off for Roselea when Wilson found himself in far too much room in 32 minutes but Thomson did well to get a toe in to divert the ball for a corner. Violet got right back into the game a minute later when Cox drove the ball across the goal and WILSON prodded home with Roselea appealing for an offside.

Wilson had a header go over the bar from a Mair cross on 40 minutes as Violet pushed for an equaliser.

Roselea scored a minute before the half time whistle and it was yet another well constructed goal. Reid fought for the ball on the right hand corner and his perfect cross was headed home by Calum WATSON to give Roselea a half time cushion.

Half Time: Montrose Roselea 3 Dundee Violet 1

Roselea undone some of the good first half performance when they conceded a soft goal in 54 minutes. WILSON broke the offside trap and found himself through on goal but still had much work to do and expertly lobbed Mcleod from 18 yards.

In 59 minutes Watson did the same at the other end however Thain did well to get a hand to his flick and Watson then shot from a tight angle when the ball broke out with Reid in a decent position in the box.

Roselea replaced Paul Taylor with brother Ryan Taylor coming on.

Violet squared the game in the 62nd minute and again it was a poor goal to lose. COX found himself in far too much room on the left hand side of the pitch and he drew Mcleod out before slotting a low ball into the corner of the net.

In 64 minutes Aaron Thomson played a great diagonal ball to Rae but his cutback was cut out at the near post.

On 70 minutes Violet almost went in front when Cox cut in and sent a rasping shot across the face of the Roselea goal.

There was a spell of very soft bookings from the match official and Ross Mitchell was shown a second yellow card which came after some play acting from Sime. He was dismissed and left Roselea with 10 men for the final 10 minutes. The Official again frustrated the Roselea crowd when Urquhart who was already on a booking escaped a second one when he brought down Rae and after the referee waved play on he seemed to forget about the incident.

Roselea thought they had won the tie in the 88th minute when a great run and cross from Morgan Smith saw Calum Watson have an open goal header from 2 yards but somehow he managed to hit the post.

Full Time: Montrose Roselea 3 Dundee Violet 3

It was on to the dreaded penalties after 90 minutes. Mcleod saved Violets first penalty from Boyd however Watson saw keeper Thain somehow scoop the ball over the bar with his foot when the ball went up the middle. Violet converted their next four with Reid & R Taylor converting and Whyte’s penalty scraping the outside of the post.

Score on penalties: Montrose Roselea 2 Dundee Violet 4

Roselea exited the cup but it was a very worthwhile exercise with no fewer than five players starting for the first time in weeks. Pick of the bunch was 17 year old Morgan Smith who had an excellent game and was easily Man of the Match. The whole squad will be needed over the coming months due to injuries and suspensions. Roselea will lick their wounds from the defeat and pick themselves up for the next League match against Arniston Rangers who are next to arrive at Broomfield Park on Sat Nov 15th again with a 2.00pm Kick Off. After Roselea’s recent resurgence in the League they will be looking to kick on from their last three wins in a row.

ROSELEA MAKE IT FOUR IN A ROW AT NORTH END

Posted by Roy Gill at Oct 31, 2014 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

DUNDEE NORTH END 1 MONTROSE ROSELEA 3

McBOOKIE.COM EAST PREMIER LEAGUE

SAT NOV 1st 2014

Roselea travelled to North End Park Dundee full of promise after their fine Scottish Cup win over Irvine Vics and also the two previous 3-2 wins in the League. Andy Tringham was working meaning Ralph Brand and Steve Kerrigan had almost a full squad to pick from.

North End had also been in a fine run of form and picked up 3 points with a resounding 5-2 win over Oakley the previous week. Six points separated the sides at Kick Off and it was another proverbial 6 pointer game. A North End win would see them on 19 points and level with leaders Edinburgh Utd whilst three points for Roselea would see them lifted out of the second bottom spot they have occupied all season.

Roselea: Mcloed, Findlater, Whyte, Reoch, R Taylor, Rae, McDowell, Anderson, Cruickshank, Collier & Reid. Subs: Bailey, Smith, P Taylor, Thomson & Mitchell.

Roselea took the lead in 5 minutes after an even opening. Anderson flighted in a great free kick and when Paul Whytes header was palmed away by keeper Kelly it fell to Dale REID and he lased the ball low and hard from 6 yards out.

It could have been all square a minute later when Findlater allowed McCabe to cross and McComiskie connected but could not get enough power to worry Mcleod who held well.

For the next 10 minutes both sides looked like they could score every time they attacked but there were no clear cut chances.

Reid did have a great chance to double his and Roselea’s tally in the 16th minute when he was put clean through but Kelly did well to save and although Reid got a shot from the rebound Smart was on hand to head clear on the goal line.

Roselea had a let off in 26 minutes when Nije was allowed room in the box and Findlater had to clear off the line, McComskie hit the rebound into Mcleods body then when the second rebound came back out McNaughton blasted high and wide.

There was a messy spell with some tackles going unpunished however Calum Rae would have been happy to see a yellow card for a very late tackle on McCabe right in front of the North End dugout.

It was all square in the 39th minute. Scott McCOMISKIE had been the dangerman for the home side all afternoon and he managed to turn well on the edge of the box and sent an unstoppable low left footed shot into the corner of the net. Roselea felt aggrieved after Cruckshank had been body checked on the half way line in the lead up to the goal.

Roselea had another free kick when Reid was crudely brought down by Rae who received a booking. Cruickshank wasted the opportunity by striking the free kick over the bar.

Half Time: Dundee North End 1 Montrose Roselea 1

Two minutes after the interval North End wasted a great chance when Nije headed wide from a McCabe cross and should have really hit the target.

In 48 minutes Reid went on a great run past 4 players and into the box before going down after a tackle which the referee correctly deemed to be fair.

The game was in the balance and swinging from end to end and McCabe had a low shot well saved by Mcleod.

Roselea then created a chance when Rae collected a short corner and swung the ball to the back post where Whyte headed goalwards and Cruickshank flicked on only for Smart to head off the line again.

In 56 minutes the home side were reduced to 10 men when McNaughton received a second yellow for a late tackle on Anderson again near the home dugout. Anderson was then replaced by Calum Watson.

Watson almost made an instant impact when he got a head to the free kick and after Kelly pushed the ball out he managed to get his head to the rebound but could not get any power behind it as he fell to the ground.

Roselea took advantage of the extra man and scored what proved to be the winner in the 70th minute. Cruckshank slipped the ball into REID at the edge of the area and he sent a beautiful curling ball into the far post from 22 yards at the corner of the 18 yard box.

Roselea managed to see the final 20 minutes out and kept up their record of struggling to play against 10 men! There were no chances for either side before referee Fordyce called a halt to proceedings.

Full Time: Dundee North End 1 Montrose Roselea 2

This was a very disciplined performance and continues their winning run to four matches. The win hoists Roselea to joint fourth bottom and are now 3 points behind a host of clubs right up to 6th place which North End occupy. If they can continue the run they are on there is nothing to stop them competing at the right end of the table.  On Sat Nov 8th Roselea switch to Cup action with Dundee Violet visiting Broomfield Park for a GA Cup 2nd Round tie which kicks off at 2.00pm. Violet had a good win on Saturday in the League with a 4-1 victory over Forfar West End.

ROSELEA PROGRESS TO 3rd ROUND

MONTROSE ROSELEA V IRVINE VICS

SCOTTISH JUNIOR CUP 2ND ROUNDS

AT OCT 25TH 2014

Roselea entertained Irvine Vics who made the 140 mile trip to Broomfield Park for a Scottish Junior Cup 2nd Round tie. The Ayrshire side had been promoted to the West Super 1st Division which is the equivalent of the East’s Premier League and they like Roselea had a tough start to the season having drawn three and lost three of their opening games sitting third bottom. An interesting tie was in prospect.

Roselea welcomed back Kyle Findlater and Calum Watson with Findlater slotting in at right back and Watson taking a place on the bench. Andy Tringham and Liam Bailey missed out due to illness and injury. A 25mph wind was raging down Broomfield and made it certain that it would be the proverbial game of two halves.

Roselea: Mcleod, Findlater, R Taylor, Whyte, Reoch, Cruickshank, Anderson, Rae, McDowell, Collier & Reid. Subs: Mitchell, Smith, Thomson, Waston & P Taylor

Irvine Vics elected to play with the wind at their backs and as expected created the first opening in 5 minutes when striker Adam chested the ball off to Campbell who hit a crisp shot from 25 yards but Mcleod was right behind it.

It was not all to be one way traffic and Reid put McDowell in and he feigned his right footed shot switching the ball to his left with the visiting keeper Lamb intercepting his attempted pass to Collier.

In 12 minutes Reid broke away down the left for Roselea but a good tackle prevented him getting a clear opportunity.

There was a couple of booking for Vics when Colligan & McKay were shown yellows for tackles and it looked like they could mix it when they wanted to. In 29 minutes Roselea won a penalty from one of these free kicks. Taylor sent in a great ball and Collier was bundled to the ground. Dale Reid took the kick but a great save from Lamb kept the scores level.

Roselea were still on top and McDowell hit a great volley just over after Collier flicked on a Taylor throw in on the half hour mark.

In 32 minutes Irvine Vics were awarded their own penalty when Anderson tripped Allan just inside the penalty area. Kevin ADAM placed the ball into the corner of the net with McLoed almost getting a hand to it.

In 40 minutes Findlater became Roselea’s first booking although he was unlucky having mistimed his tackle.

Half Time Montrose Roselea 0 Irvine Vics 1

Roselea were on top in the first half and with the wind at their backs were expected to lay siege on the Vics goal. Collier and Cruickshank both had early efforts however they were both over the bar.

In 51 minutes Craig Anderson sent in a great free kick which Findlater flicked goalwards bringing out a great stop from Lamb and Collier was given offside when he followed up.

Irvine Vics had the ball in the net again in 55 minutes but offside was correctly given against it.

In 57 minutes Roselea got on level terms with a well taken goal. Cruickshank sent a ball through the middle and Calum RAE struck a brilliant early drive from 20 yards into the corner of the net.

Craig Anderson was next to try his luck for Roselea and his 35 yard shot was marginally off target on the hour mark. A minute later Roselea got their noses in front with a text book goal. Findlater played a beautifully weighted pass down the line to Anderson and his early cross was attacked by Dale REID who headed home from close range.

In 73 minutes Roselea made their first change with Watson replacing Ryan Taylor. In 78 minutes Mitchell replaced Anderson.

Calum Rae sent in a vicious swerving corner which just missed the upright then McDowell hit a screamer which came off the head of a Vics defender.

Roselea were needing another goal to make their passage into the 3rd Round secure and that came in the 84th minute when WATSON took advantage of a mistake and slotted home a great finish.

There was one last change for Roselea in the final few minutes with Thomson coming on for Rae.

Full Time: Montrose Roselea 3 Irvine Vics 1

Roselea made harder work of this tie than they should have mainly due to the penalty reversal in the first half. There were three well worked goals however in the second half which secured Roselea’s passage into the 3rd Round draw. The draw will be made on Tuesday November the 4th at 12.30pm. Match Sponsors Dennis Robertson and friends awarded Michael Cruickshank as the Man of the Match.

This week Roselea are back on League duty when they travel to Dundee to face North End on Mcbookie.com East Premier League action. Please note that the kick off for this match is 2.00pm

LEA NERVY BUT BEAT THE GLENS

Posted by Roy Gill at Oct 17, 2014 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

MONTROSE ROSELEA V GLENROTHES

MCBOOKIE.COM EAST PREMIER LEAGUE

SAT OCT 18TH 2014

With the third way point of the season looming Roselea went into matchday of the McBookie.com East Premier League facing an early six pointer against visitors Glenrothes. The visitors had started the season well but a run of poor results saw them sucked into the bottom quarter of the League sitting with 11 points from 9 games whilst Roselea sat on 10 points from the same amount of games.

Roselea welcomed back Morgan Smith from holiday, Andy Tringham & Michael Cruickshank from work however Calum Watson & Kyle Findlater were absent whilst  Liam Bailey missed out through injury.

Roselea had beaten the Glens at home last season by 2-0 and were hoping for a similar result again. After the severe overnight rain Broomfield Park as normal soaked it up and there was a strengthening South East wind which was going to have an impact on proceedings.

Roselea: Mcleod, Rae, Whyte, Reoch, R Taylor, Mitchell, Anderson, McDowell, Cruickshank, Reid & Collier. Subs: Smith, Thomson, Tringham, Brand & Kerrigan.

There was a good advantage played by the referee on the corner of the box and he was able to bring it back after Collier had been fouled in 4 minutes.  Cruickshank sent in a great free kick which used the wind for whip and two Roselea players almost made contact before Gay collected.

In 5 minutes Martin of Glens had the ball in the net but he was correctly adjudged offside after Moffat had poked the ball forward from a tackle.

With 12 minutes gone Glenrothes had their first real chance when Martin cut the ball back to the penalty spot but Scarborough scooped the ball over the bar. Glenrothes had a series of corners with the wind at their back and from one Mcleod had to tip it behind before he had to tip the next on to the bar before the ball was cleared.

In 21 minutes a long clearance from a corner almost saw Cruickshank in but the alert keeper Gay managed to make the 50-50 ball his and cleared. Cruickshank did get a chance a minute later however his shot was blocked as was Collier’s follow up effort which was blocked for a corner. Anderson sent in the corner and after McDowell’s header fell to Collier at the far post he lashed the ball across the face of the goal and Ryan TAYLOR was on hand at the far post to bundle the ball home to give Roselea the lead.

Very quickly at the other end Scarborough found too much room in the Roselea box before an excellent McDowell tackle averted the danger.

In 26 minutes Glenrothes equalised with a goal created by Roselea mistakes. First Ryan Taylor let the ball go under his foot at the half way line to give away a throw in, then Scarborough was given to too much time too turn and switch play before Rae miscontrolled allowing WALLACE to break through and he had a cool finish past Mcleod from 20 yards to pull the visitors level.

In 30 minutes Mitchell showed a good turn of pace and took on his opponent before whipping in a great cross which had to be cleared then he closed down in the middle of the park before releasing Cruickshank for a cross which Gay was well positioned to hold. Paul Whyte gave away a foul some 30 yards out in 36 minutes and it was evident that Jackson was lining up a strike. Mcleod was behind his first effort and did superbly well to block two more attempts before turning the ball behind in the scramble.

Roselea regained the lead in the 41st minute. Cruickshank sent in a low cross which fell to Dale REID at the far post but he could not direct the ball on target and when it came back to Cruickshank he sent in a head height ball which Reid directed into the corner of the net with a beautiful header.

Half Time: Montrose Roselea 2 Glenrothes 1

Roselea came out with the wind at their backs but it is never easy attacking with the emphasis on getting the ball wide or to feet.

Glenrothes gave themselves a shot in the arm when they equalised after looking dangerous in the opening minutes of the second period. Jo Reoch found himself isolated with the ever dangerous John Martin who twisted and turned him before chipping over Mcleod to find the arriving WALLACE for his second of the game with Roselea claiming for offside. The goal came in 53 minutes.

In 57 minutes Roselea had a chance when Collier had a free kick opportunity from 25 yards but his shot found the end of the wall and went behind for a corner. Collier then had a gilt edged chance when a Mcleod by kick went all the way through to him but he shot from 20 yards with his left foot and Gay saved with his feet.

In 61 minutes Roselea were again unlucky not to go ahead when a Rae cross was headed onto the bar by Collier. Anderson then had a snap volley from a poor Gay kick out go just wide.

Scarborough of Glenrothes had previously been booked along with Rae of Roselea was shown a second yellow for dissent but claimed he had been shouting to a team mate. Referee Soutar was not so convinced and he was shown a red card in 68 minutes.

Tringham replaced Mitchell for Roselea in 70 minutes.

The game swung dramatically in the 73 minute and not thanks to a great save from McLeod. Martin had been giving Roselea’s defence a hard time all afternoon and once again broke free looking certain to score until a great intervention from Mcleod who blocked at his feet. When the ball swung to the other end Dale REID volleyed home a great finish to put Roselea back in front.

In 88 minutes Grierson of Glenrothes was the second player to walk and can have no complaints after he brought Reid down who had turned him on the half way line and as it was a “goal scoring opportunity” he had to walk.

Collier should have made it four for Roselea when he side footed a Cruickshank cutback onto the bar on time. In stoppage time there were a couple of nervy moments for Roselea who should have been on easy street against 9 men but they held themselves together for a great win.

Full Time: Montrose Roselea 3 Glenrothes 2

This was a great win for Roselea however it should have been easier considering the pressure and chances they had. Glenrothes were always a danger however with the experienced Martin and Scarborough a handful for any defence. The win brings Roselea to within a point of the four clubs above them however in a very open League they are also only 9 points off top spot! Roselea now sit 4 points better off at the same stage last season but know that much work lies ahead to match the escapade of the previous campaign.

Next Saturday Roselea are at home to Irvine Vics in the 2nd Round of the Scottish Cup in a match that kicks off at 2.30pm. In the evening the club will host their 6th Ladies Dinner in the Links Hotel with over 100 guests attending to hear speakers Keara Murphy and Patrice.

SUPERB WIN AT LEAGUE LEADERS

Posted by Roy Gill at Oct 12, 2014 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

MONTROSE ROSELEA v DUNDONALD BLUEBELL

McBOOKIE.COM EAST PREMIER LEAGUESAT 4th OCT 2014

Roselea's trip to Dundonald was going to be a stiff test for the visitors
as the homesters were sitting proudly at the top of the league and a
great performance would be needed to take anything from the game.
Several players returned after missing the previous match v Dalkeith with Findlater, Colllier, Ryan & Paul Taylor and Whyte returning however they were still missing Cruickshank and Smith.

Roselea: McLeod, Rae, Findlater, McDowell, Reoch, Whyte, Reid, Anderson, Watson, Collier, R Taylor. Subs: P Taylor, Thomson, Mitchell, Brand, Kerrigan

There was an early chance for Dundonald straight from the kick off with Walton cutting the ball back from the byline finding Lally 10 yards out and his first time shot went inches past the post. In 8 minutes Carr hits a shot from the edge of the box with Mcleod
producing a great save.

Two minutes later Dale Reid is clean through on goal after a great
through ball from James Collier but hits the side netting with his
effort.

On 13 mins Dundonalds Lee Duffy is next to try his luck with a wonderful
shot from fully 25 yards hitting the underside of the bar then bouncing
on the line then cleared after a scramble. The next attack sees the homesters Ian Lally through on goal and his effort also goes narrowly past the post.

Dundonald thought they had scored in 18 minutes as a fierce shot was
saved well by McLeod with the ball spilling out to Lally who side foots
into the net from 6 yards out with the goal being chalked off with
offside being the correct decision.

With 20 mins gone McLeod being kept busy producing another great save stopping an effort from Duffy with Ryan Taylor clearing the danger.
Roselea were really up against it and 3 minutes later McLeod makes another wonderful save with Dundonalds Elder this time through on goal and the keeper stands tall to block the strikers effort.
28 mins penalty for the homesters as  Whyte misses the ball taking the
player down and Lee DUFFY sends McLeod the wrong way 1-0 Dundonald.

Next chance falls to the Roselea with a Ryan Taylor free kick within
his own half the long ball lands to James Collier who turns and shoots
from 12 yards unfortunately the ball hits a defenders legs and is
cleared with the keeper well beaten.

In 39 mins Roselea equalise with Kyle Findlater’s long ball landing to
Calum WATSON with his marker slipping he had the simplest of tasks
turning and shooting low into the keepers right hand corner of the net.
1-1.

Good play and skill from Dundonalds Lally who keeps the ball left then
right before hitting a volley his shot high over the bar.

Disaster for the Roselea as they concede on half time for the second
week in a row. A simple ball from midfield finds it's way through the
defence with Lewis ELDER stretching to get a toe on the ball to divert
it past the on rushing McLeod.

HT Dundonald Bluebell 2 Montrose Roselea 1

Second half starts with the play much tighter with the visitors having
the first chance as Watson fires narrowly past the post.

Ryan Taylor is next to test the keeper with his powerful 20 yard free
kick being palmed over the bar by the Dundonald keeper. In 59 mins from the resultant corner kick Kyle Findlater out jumps the Dundonald defence but his header is just over the bar.

In 65 mins Roselea deservedly equalise with Dale REID sliding in at the
far post from 6 yards to score across the keeper.

Minute later Roselea are fortunate as a great cross flashes across the
goal with no takers.

On 70 mins Dale Reid does well beating 2 defenders then firing a great
shot keeper saves at the second attempt with Watson rushing in.

Reid then beat his marker on the edge of the box feigns his
shot then is taken down in the box ref awards a penalty after the loud
appeals. REID picks himself up and sends the keeper the wrong way with
the Roselea bench and supporters celebrating in style.

Roselea see the game out defending well and restricting the home side
to a couple of long range efforts that didn't test McLeod.

Roselea deserve the win today on merit for their second half
performance against a very good Dundonald side.

Next week Roselea are back at Broomfield against Glenrothes Kick Off 2.30pm.
