2007 - Week One Capsule

Sunday's action featured Monroe Division Rivals Millstadt VFW at the Valmeyer Lakers. In the opener, Valmeyer's Dave Briesacher picked up where he left off last year by blanking Millstadt 5-0 on a four hit shut out, going 7 innings for the complete game - he walked one and fanned one. Valmeyer's defense provided good support with three double plays. Ben Neff was the offense star with a 3 for 3 performance that included a home run and two RBIs. Newcomers Matt Kerperein and Tony Allen each picked up two hits for Millstadt. Matt Germann suffered the loss. In the nightcap, Millstatdt bounced back to top Valmeyer 5-3. Kerperein picked up the win - the lanky lefty threw a 7 inning three hitter - yielding 2 earned runs with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. Tony Allen rapped a bases loaded triple to spark the offense. Chris Stenzel was the losing pitcher for the Lakers. Justin Rohlfing was 1 for three including a home run and three RBIs. In other Monroe Division action, the Waterloo Buds played host to the Columbia Saints. In the first game, Cory Blackwell fired a three hit shutout, walking one and striking out two. Jake Hurst provided the offensive firepower with a 2 for 3 day that included a home run and 2 RBIs. Eric Kuntz suffered the loss for the Saints while Kyle Hargis, Ryan Davis and Eric Hosler each picked up a hit in the contest. The second game was saw the Buds come from behind to pick up the sweep by the score of 11-7, fueled by an eight outburst in the third inning. Brian Fuess sparked Waterloo with a 3 for 4 game that included a home run and 5 RBIs. Scott Amann and Travis Dawson each contributed two hits. Brandon Musso earned the victory for the Buds while Kyle Hargis suffered the loss for the Saints. The St. Clair Division saw Belleville sweep the double header from Edwardsville 5-1 and 9-6. In the first game, Justin Clayton threw a one hitter for the complete game victory - he walked 3 and struck out 6. Carl Heurer and Mark Hillen each had two hits for the Merchants. Adam Davis picked up the only hit for Edwardsville. In the second game, Markus Barriger picked up the victory giving up 4 hits and 2 earned runs over 6 innings - he walked 1 and fanned 10. Chad Turnbull led the offense with a 2 for 4 game that included 2 RBIs. Davis and Aaron Reiss each had one hit, while Jared Fravell contributed 2 hits. Reiss picked up 2 RBIs. In other St. Clair action, the Fairview Heights Redbirds swept the East St. Louis Colt 45s by the scores of 12-1 and 8-2. In the opener, Adam Hill picked up where he left off last year, leading Fairview with a two hitter - he walked no one and fanned 10. John Campbell had 3 hits and 3 RBIs to pace the Redbirds offense. Mike Sellers homered for the Colts while Josh Wathen suffered the loss. In the second game, Darrell Garcia was the winning pitcher, scaterring 3 hits over 5 innings while walking one and fanning 10. All Star Game MVP Jake Bayers paced the Redbird offense with 3 hits and an RBI and newcomer Larry Watson added 2 hits and an RBI. Sellers picked up 2 hits in the nightcap while James Pinales took the loss for the Colt 45s. In non-division action, The St. Louis Spikes swept the Marissa Guns by the scores of 11-6 and 6-2 at Sauget.
