Lakota United Soccer Club - Lynx

Lakota United Premier is a girls U12 (born after August 1, 1995) select soccer team from Cincinnati, Ohio.  The team is part of the Lakota United Soccer Club, that makes its home in the Lakota school district in Liberty & West Chester Townships.  LUSC Premier competes in the Cincinnati United Soccer League (CUSL) first division, which is recognised as the most competitive in the Cincinnati area.

Lakota United Premier is a girls U12 select soccer team who will begin their seventh consecutive season in the Premier division of the Cincinnati United Soccer League (CUSL) this Spring.

LUSC Premier originated as the U8 LSO Lynx in the winter of 2003 from girls who had played in the LSO and West Chester SAY recreational programs. Head Coach Jim Dean and Assistant Alan Webb already knew most of the girls through coaching in the LSO SAY program. Over the winter the Lynx trained with WUSA professional player Katie Barnes as they prepared for their first select season of GC8 play. That first U8 season was highly successful with the Lynx winning all seven regular season games and going 2-2 in the end of season Tide GC8 Festival.

Based on their GC8 record the Lynx were placed in the Premier division of CUSL for their U9 campaign. The Lynx played well in the U9 Fall season, finishing in 3rd place in the league, winning the Forest Park Invitational and making the final of the Arsenal Challenge Cup.

Over the winter, LSO Director of Coaching Wil Cagle introduced Claire Gauche to the Lynx as their trainer. The Lynx continued to improve as a team in the U9 spring season with a second place finish in the CUSL Premier Division, wins in the Middletown Spring Blast and Miami University Spring Classic, and being the finalist at the adidas Warrior Classic.

Over the summer of 2005 the LSO and LSC select soccer clubs merged, the LSO Lynx becoming the Lakota United Lynx as they entered their U10 campaign. The Fall 2005 season was the most competitive to date with the top six teams in the CUSL Premier division proving capable of winning against any team. The Lynx continued their improvement as individuals and as a team, proving to be the most consistent team and winning the league. They also had more success in tournament play, making the final of the Arsenal Challenge Cup for the second year in a row and being the finalist at the Nightmare at the Rock, despite playing up in the U11 age group.

The Spring 2006 season saw the Lynx demonstrate considerable character.  A poor performance in the first game of the PRF United Cup saw the Lynx miss the final.  The Lynx started their CUSL season with two sub-standard perfomances resulting in losses and then suffered a heart breaking last second loss on a penalty kick to the Cardinals.  After losing their opening game in the Miami Spring Classic the coaches challenged the team to turn the season around.  The girls responded in the best possible way, convincingly winning their last 4 CUSL games and claiming 3rd place in the league.  The Lynx also won their last two games at the Miami Spring Classic and all four games en route to winning the Jarosi-Willis Memorial Cup.

The 2006 Fall season started strongly with the Lynx finally winning the Arsenal Challenge Cup.  However, an inability to find the back of the net meant that several strong team performances were not translated into victories.  The result being a 4th place finish in the CUSL Premier League and two tournament semi-final eliminations.

For the Spring '07 season Claire Wellington took over as the head coach, with Jim and Alan remaining as assistant coaches.  The Lynx enjoyed a solid first season with Claire at the helm, finishing fourth in the CUSL Premier division and reaching the semi finals of the Ohio South State Cup and adidas Warrior Classic.

With the change of playing format from 8v8 to 11v11 at U12, the LUSC Lynx and LUSC Hawks effectively merged, the result being the LUSC Premier.  LUSC Premier struggled in the Fall of 2007 with the new format on the larger fields and with bringing so many new girls together.

LUSC Premier strugglesd at the start of the Spring 2008 with only 13 players on the roster.  However, after losing the first four CUSL league games the girls made substantial improvements as individuals and gelled as a team.  They won the Mid American Soccer Classic, won their last two league games in impressive fashion and were the only Ohio team to make the semi finals of the very competitive Warrior Classic.

Lakota United Premier showed that their late season improvement in form was no fluke by making the semi-finals of the Warrior Classic over Memorial Day weekend.

 Deadly finishing from Lauren Hoover led LUP to a 3-2 victory over North Macomb Storm from Michigan in the opening game.  LUP took a 1-0 lead into half time after a fine indiviual effort and strike from Hoover.  Early in the second half Heather McNutt got behind the left side of the North Macomb defense, whipped in a vicious cross that the goalkeeper couldn't hold and Hoover pounced on the lose ball.  North Macomb pulled back a goal, but LUP looked to have wrapped up the game after guest player Maci Dungan found Hoover at the top of the penalty area and she completed her hat trick.  However, the final minutes proved tense as North Macomb scored again with two minutes reamaining and push forward for the equalizer.

Maybe it was the 6 hours spent at Ankeney Park before the second game, but LUP produced their most lackluster performance of the season against Blast FC.  After trailing 3-0 at half time, hopes for a come back were briefly raised when Lauren Hoover released Cailyn Wachtel for her first goal of the season.  However, despite a much better performance in the second half, LUP lost the game 4-1.

Sunday morning arrived with LUP needing a victory over Cleveland Impact and help in the other pool game.  The LUP midfield trio of Kristyn Hatke, Cailyn Wachtel and Rachel Gary dominated the the early going and provided great service to Hoover, McNutt and Claire Webb up front.  On the 20 minute mark Gary won the ball at the edge of the Impact penalty area, faked out two defenders and chipped the keeper for the most spectacular goal of the season.  Just before half time it appeared that Cleveland Impact would tie the score when their left winger broke through.  However, just as she prepared to shoot Mo Combs appeared from nowhere to make a perfectly timed challenge and prevent a goal.  LUP continued to hold the upper hand a sealed the game when center half Amy Dean picked off a pass and found Hoover who scored her 100th goal for LUP.

After the 2-0 victory, LUP stayed to cheer North Macomb, who needed to deny Blast FC a victory for LUP to advance.  In a nail-biter North Macomb tied 2-2 and LUP were set up to play Varder, from Michigan, in the semi-final.

Varder had the advantage of the early exchanges and soon had a 1-0 lead.  However, LUP battled back and were awarded a penalty when Ali Dicke was pushed in penalty area.  Lauren Hoover failed to convert the spot kick, but moments later Hoover was obstructed inside the box and she thundered the indirect free kick into the top corner on the Varder goal.   The second half was played mainly in LUP territory and resolute defending by Heather McNutt, Mo Combs, Amy Dean, Natalie Murray and Madison Bueter and several fine saves from Maci Dungan keeping the game even.  Eventually, the sustained pressure resulted in two LUP defenders colliding and Varder retaking the lead.  Despite working hard, LUP was unable to create any clear goal scoring oppoprtunities in the second half, although Claire Webb got through in the final minute of the game, but her left footed shot went wide.  Despite the 2-1 loss, this was one of LUP's best performances of the season against a very strong Varder team.

LUSC Premier advanced to the round of 16 of the Ohio South State Cup with a tough 1-0 win over STAR Tigers.  The only goal of the game came when Claire Webb cut inside from the left wing and found the overlapping Kristyn Hatke.  Hatke beat two Tiger defenders before sending in the perfect cross for Mo Combs to convert from close range.  Moments later the Tigers almost tied the game on a free kick which goalkeeper Amy Dean did well to turn onto her goalpost.  Although LUP had a clear advantage in terms of possession they struggled with the last pass and could not create any other clear goal scoring opportunities.  In the final 5 minutes the Tigers had two opportunities on break aways to take the game into extra time, but each time the Tigers forward could not convert the one on one situation with Amy Dean.

LUP faced Beavercreek Celtic Premier in the round of 16.  After trailing at half time, two Rachel Gary goals gave LUP a 2-1 lead in the second half.  However, the short bench hurt LUP as the girls tired and Beavercreek equalized and then missed a penalty kick which should have won the game as regulation time ended.  After a scoreless over time the teams went into a penalty kick shoot out.  Unfortunately, only Lauren Hoover and Amy Dean converted their spot kicks and LUP were eliminated 3-2 in the shoot out.

 

LUSC Premier kicked off their Spring ’08 campaign with four games in the Cincinnati Spring Thaw Out on March 14-16.  The LUP roster was bolstered by 3 guest players from Warren County SC; Sara Robinson, Megan Napier & Maci Dugan.

 

It was Friday night lights for LUP as they took on GSE Cardinal Red in an evening fixture at Walnut Hills HS.  Although LUP dominated in terms of possession, a lack of willingness to shoot resulted the territorial advantage only being converted into one Lauren Hoover goal.  Unfortunately, the lack of a full time goalkeeper contributed to the Cardinal equalizer and a 1-1 draw.

 

Saturday morning saw LUP match up with Pacesetter United of Toledo for the first time.  In an evenly matched game of few scoring opportunities for either team, Pacesetter found the back of the LUP net once to secure a 1-0 win.

 

LUP started very poorly against Cleveland Impact, falling three goals behind very quickly.  A juggle of the line up by Coach Wellington changed the complexion of the game.  The LUP defense denied Cleveland any more scoring opportunities and Lindsey Kelly & Kristyn Hatke both came close to scoring, but the damage had already been done and LUP lost 3-0.

 

LUP played better than the score against GSE Cardinal Premier would suggest.  After conceding an early goal, LUP equalized when a shot from Lauren Hoover was too hot for the Cardinal keeper to handle and Alison Dicke pounced on the loose ball.  A first half injury resulted in 5 minutes added time and the Cardinals regained the lead right at the end of it.  LUP pushed forward throughout the second half in search of the equalizer, but conceded a late breakaway goal to make the final score 3-1.
