D-RAYS DROP HEARTBREAKER TO ROCKIES, 13-12

Posted by Brian Cunningham on Jun 09 2004 at 05:00PM PDT

The Devil Rays and Rockies played a great game tonight at Egan Field, with the Rockies coming back in thrilling fashion to win in the last inning, 13-12. It was the second meeting of the two teams this year, with the Devil Rays having taken the first game. The visiting Devil Rays started out strong, with five runs in the first inning, and the Rockies answered with two. The Rays went down in order in the second, and the Rockies added three more runs to tie the score. After the Devil Rays took an 8-5 lead in the top of the third, the Rockies came back with a five-spot to take their first lead of the game, 10-8. The D-Rays fought right back with four in the top of the fourth for a 12-10 lead, then the Rockies scored one to cut the lead to 12-11. The Rays couldn't score in the fifth (and last) inning, so it was up to the defense to hold the lead. But the first-place Rockies were able to squeeze two runs across to win 13-12. Tony Orlando had a double and a single for the Devil Rays, and Alec Strain and Aaron Green had two singles. Mike Walters had a double and Ryan Campbell had a single. For the Rockies, Stephen Keeler had a double and a single, and Finnian Burke had a triple. Paul Throckmorton pitched well, and Thomas Markinac made a nice play at second base.
