EUCLID -- A good rivalry needs close games, and this hard-fought contest was fuel for the fire.
Riverside took a 1-0 lead on defenseman Robert Stolz's third goal in as many days. With the way goalie James Penca was playing, it looked like that would hold up as the Beavers attack stalled. Penca stopped all 14 shots he faced the first two periods.
VASJ scored at 8:46 of the first period and Riverside was unable to regain the lead in regulation despite 11 third-period shots.
The Vikings fired away at Penca in overtime and he rejected the rubber six times, allowing his teammates enough time to regroup. Matt Crouse scored off a Jordan Sintic assist to end it at 2:56.
VASJ outshot Riverside, 28-27, and Penca had 26 saves.
Defenseman Ian Warsinskey was injured in the first period. An MRI later showed a femur bone bruise and a dislocated kneecap, keeping him out at least two weeks.
