Water, yes, water the infield dirt!

Posted by Dennis Kane at May 11, 2003 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
The city of Manhattan Beach requires MBLL to control the amount of dust and has the authority to stop games if dust is not kept under control. MBLL has the responsibility to reduce dust and watering is the most effective manner of dust control. All fields should be watered, raked, and dragged before each game. Connecting the water caddy to water supply.
  1. Remove water caddy from equipment shed.
  2. Position caddy next to the water supply (Located behind the Pitcher?s mound) so there will be no tension applied to the water supply pipe.
  3. Ensure that the valve on the spray handle and coupler are closed.
  4. Remove the cover from the water supply.
  5. Remove coupler from the caddy handle and carefully place the coupler into the water supply pipe.
  6. With one hand on the coupler silver handle and the other on top of the coupler, carefully push the coupler down into the pipe and turn coupler clock-wise at least _ turn.
  7. If there is too much pressure preventing the coupler from locking into the pipe, open the valve connected to the coupler and repeat step 6.
  8. If coupler will not engage do not force it in or apply excessive force. Inform your team manager and do not attempt to water the field. The Manager shall contact the division commissioner to correct the problem.
Watering the field
  1. Carefully unwind the hose from the caddy.
  2. Lightly water infield, home plate area, & base paths. (DO NOT OVER WATER) (While watering make sure that the hose is not pulling on the caddy and the caddy is not pulling on the water supply pipe)
  3. Compact loose dirt in Batters Boxes and Pitchers Mound. (A little water helps compact the dirt)
Storing water caddy
  1. When finished watering the field, close the valve connected to the coupler and on the spray handle.
  2. With one hand on the coupler silver handle and the other on top of the coupler, carefully push down slightly on the coupler and turn the coupler counter-clockwise until it can be removed from the water supply pipe.
  3. Replace the water supply cover.
  4. Carefully roll up hose on caddy making sure that there are no kinks in the hose.
  5. Open one the valve on the coupler for a moment to relieve pressure in the hose.
  6. Make sure valves are closed so that water does not drain out into the sheds.
  7. Clip coupler and spray nozzle to caddy handle & return caddy to equipment shed.

Managers! Pre and post game field maintenance

Posted by Dennis Kane at May 11, 2003 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
To keep our fields in good condition, managers and Team Dads must assure that the following tasks are done every game. Pre-Game - both teams
  1. Walk entire field and dugout areas to ensure all areas are safe and the field is safe to play on.
    1. Correct all unsafe conditions immediately.
    2. If there are any unsafe conditions that cannot be immediately corrected the umpire and both Managers must be informed of the safety issues.
    3. The Managers and the Umpire have the responsibility to cancel the game if any safety issues pose an unacceptable risk to anyone in attendance.
    4. Inform your division commissioner about any safety issues as soon as possible.
Pre-Game - home team
  1. Rake, drag, and water the dirt in the Infield, Home Plate area, and Base Paths. (See separate instructions for watering and using the hose caddy)
  2. Check Batters Boxes to ensure there are no low spots. Rake additional dirt into the Batter?s Box area and compact Batter?s Box area as required.
  3. (If required, lightly water the Batter?s Boxes to help compact the ground.)
  4. Rake Pitchers Mound filling all holes and smoothing out the mound. (If required, lightly water the Pitcher?s Mound to help compact the ground.)
  5. After raking, dragging, and watering the Infield, chalk the Base Paths and the Batters Boxes and install basses.
Post-game - home team
  1. Rake Pitchers Mound and Batter Boxes filling in any holes.
  2. Smooth the Pitchers Mound and level out the Batters Boxes.
  3. Return Bases and all field equipment to the sheds.
  4. Lock sheds.
Post-game - both teams
  1. Clean Dugouts, field, and stands.
  2. Make sure all trash is thrown away properly
