DID YOU KNOW?

GO with the SMOKE...

There are three types of timing systems that can be used to measure the performance of athletes at track meets:

Fully Automatic Timing: Begins automatically with an electronic signal from the starting unit and ends automatically with an electronic signal from the finish pad (Line).

Semi-Automatic Timing: Begins automatically with an electronic signal from the starting unit and ends manually when the timer pushes his/her button at the finish of the race.

Manual Timing: Begins manually and ends manually, as with stop watches.

When recording sprinting/hurdling/running times: FAT is the gold standard: But since parents and coaches will not see FAT until the National Qualifier in late June 2014; it is best to focus on the starter.

  • If you start your stop watch or timer from the smoke of the starter's pistol (gun); your recorded times will be closer to FAT then waiting to hear the sound of the starter's pistol (gun).
  •  By the time you hear the starter's pistol (gun) to press start in your stop watch; you would have lost 0.3 - 0.7 seconds of elapsed time.
  • Go with the smoke.  Often times, many coaches and parents question the different times of their athletes from practice meets  to qualifiers, because they are accustom to hand timing.  Start your times from the smoke of the starter's pistol (gun).
