Brief History of the West Region Headquarters

Posted by Nick Caringi on Dec 10 2002 at 04:00PM PST
The Western Regional Headquarters was constructed in 1969. The property on which the Headquarters has been constructed was made available to Little League Baseball by the City of San Bernardino. Al Houghton Stadium and the Thomas C. Boyle Administration Building were built first and the balance of what is here today has been gradually added. Warner Hodgdon, a local businessman contributed heavily to the swimming pool, which is now an important part of the Headquarters. Local firms pitched in with donated building materials, equipment and labor to gradually complete the complex. Many of our District Administrators and other local people labored hard and long. Western Regional Headquarters as it stands today has truly been a "labor of love". Over the years the Western Region Headquarters has undergone many improvements. In 1998 a new restroom facility was completed thus eliminating the need for portable restrooms as had been the case during the Western Regional Tournaments held in prior years. This year we completely remodeled the restrooms in the Administration Building, renovated the press box, resurfaced the asphalt on the upper stadium and lower entry way, poured cement in the pin trading area, and started our renovation of the team barracks, which includes adding clothes storage cabinets in the coaches rooms and painting the inside of all the barracks. Plans are in the works to finish the renovation project of the team barracks as well as other projects around the 27-acre facility. On the grounds of the Headquarters Complex is a Junior Olympic size swimming pool. Other amenities include, outdoor basketball courts, Ping-Pong, batting cages, practice fields and a recreation hall. There is a Senior Division field currently used for regular season play by 11 local leagues in the San Bernardino area. In addition to team housing facilities, there is another large building with sleeping quarters for volunteers, laundry room, linen supply room and an infirmary.
