USA Hockey and identity theft

Posted by Kelly Ross on Feb 06 2003 at 04:00PM PST in 2018-19
Bob Warshawsky received an article detailing the increased danger of identity theft involving organizations which have members’ or employees’ names, addresses, dates of birth and Social Security numbers. He immediately thought about USA Hockey registration forms and sent a copy of the article to Larry Shaw at Cleveland Heights Parks and Recreation requesting that we refrain from giving Social Security numbers to USA Hockey. Larry referred his email to Chris Kendel, and Bob wanted the following reply posted to make all players in the league aware of the change in Cleveland Heights policy: "Dear Bob, Larry forwarded me a copy of your e-mail with the attached USA Today article concerning use of SS# for identification purposes and the potential for identity theft. Having two children that play hockey and being a coach myself I have always been nervous about using our Social Security numbers. Please note and rest asurred that in the future we will no longer ask or require that players submit their SS# when registering to play. USA Hockey's registration software can assign a random PIN for cataloging each participant. I will be handling the registrations from here on out and entering them into the computer. In the past Larry has always had a member of our staff enter them. I hope this information helps put your and those of your players minds at ease. When I get the new updated software I can delete each player's information and re-enter it using the random PIN function. Yours in good sports, Chris Kendel, Assistant Commissioner of Parks and Recreation City of Cleveland Heights" image
