State Title Within Sellers' Grasp

Posted by Mark Hyland at Feb 10, 2003 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Philadelphia Inquirer By Joe Santoliquito Someone always seemed to be standing between Brian Sellers and his dream of winning a state wrestling championship. In his sophomore and junior years, the Pennsbury 119-pounder just happened to be in the same weight class, 112 pounds, as a two-time state champion Jermaine Jones. In his freshman year, Sellers' own inexperience got in his way. Now, in his senior year, no one seems likely to block Sellers' path to the PIAA Class AAA state championship. It's taken time and patience, and many, many hours of hard work, but Sellers appears unstoppable this season. The 5-foot-3 senior is ranked No. 1 at 119 in Southeast Pennsylvania by The Inquirer with a 34-1 record. He's approaching the all-time Pennsbury career victory mark of 130, held by Chuck Connors (a 112-pound state champ in 1996) and Kip Kiefer (a 119-pound state champ in '92). Sellers has a career mark of 122-19, with at least another month left in the season. He's a two-time Section 1 champion at 112. He earned District 1 North Class AAA and Southeast Regional titles at 112 when he was a sophomore. Last season, his 44-6 record tied Connors for a school record of victories in a season. All that's left for Sellers is winning a state title. His quest will begin in the Section 1 championship at Pennsbury on Saturday at 10 a.m. "I'm ready to get out there and just go, because I think I can really do well this year," said Sellers, who lives in Yardley, Bucks County. "Last year, there was a two-time state champion who I knew I'd have to face sooner or later, which doesn't give you much hope. This year, I don't think there is anyone out there that I can't beat. I feel good about my chances." Sellers actually finished higher than Jones, now at Ohio State on a wrestling scholarship, placing fifth at 112. Jones, weakened by mononucleosis, didn't medal in the top eight, although he did beat Sellers in the Southeast regional, which kept Sellers from being a higher seed in the state tournament. Of Sellers' six losses last year, five came against state-caliber opponents. Sellers dropped two decisions to Jones (including the loss in the regional), two to Easton's Chad Sportelli, now on a full wrestling scholarship at Nebraska, and one to Cedar Cliff's Jared Royer, who finished third in the state at 112 last year. Sellers will campaign for a state title at 119 this season because it just became too difficult to stay down at 112, where he lost his only match in December, dropping a double-overtime rideout to Littlestown High's (Pa.) Mike Anderson at the DeLeone Catholic Invitational. Since then, Sellers has won 17 straight, 10 coming by way of fall. He's pinning more opponents than he ever has as a four-year starter for the Falcons, who are the No. 1-ranked team in Southeast Pennsylvania by The Inquirer. "Brian is definitely more focused and more directed, and that shows in just about everything he's doing," Pennsbury coach Joe Kiefer said. "You could say he's driven, and I think it's accurate to say nothing gets in his way. His goal is to get at or near the top, and the chances are certainly good that he can do that. Brian without a doubt will go down as one of the best, if not the top two or three in the history of the program." Sellers, 18, who is getting attention from Drexel, Virginia, Penn State, Millersville, Bloomsburg and Rider, realizes what's still ahead - and what he needs to reach his goal. "My mentality has changed, I'm just a lot hungrier this year," Sellers said. "It's my last year to go out there and win. I never went into a match thinking I couldn't win last year, but there was some intimidation facing guys like Jones and Sportelli. That affected the way I was wrestling. I'm a lot more confident than I was last year." It shows. "Every match, I try to get focused," Sellers said. "When I go out on the mat, I'm as focused as a I can be, and I looked at guys last year who placed better than me. I knew on any given day I could beat them. I want to make sure that I'm the one looking down, standing up higher in the podium this year."

Philadelphia Inquirer By Joe Santoliquito Pennsbury coach Joe Kiefer is calling this edition of the Falcons special. But he isn't going so far as to say it's the best team he's ever had. One of the best, but not the best. Kiefer may find out where the Falcons stand this weekend, when District 1 champion Pennsbury, the No. 1 team in Southeast Pennsylvania, competes in the PIAA Class AAA state dual-meet championship. The Falcons open tomorrow against District 6 champion State College, at Hershey Park's Giant Center. Pennsbury (26-0) has five wrestlers ranked in Southeast Pennsylvania. "This is a very special group of kids, with a great deal of experience," said Kiefer, whose team reached the state semifinals last season before falling to state champion Easton. "The kids on this team have wrestled for a long time, but I wouldn't go as far as saying this is the best team I've had. I had a team in '92 that was undefeated and very good. I would say we are better prepared than we were last year." If Pennsbury wins its opener, it would wrestle the Erie Prep-Kiski Area winner in the semifinals at 10 a.m. Saturday. The championship is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at the Giant Center.
