Interested in Girls' Hockey?

Posted by Marianne Graham on Sep 22 2005 at 05:00PM PDT
I've been approached by a few families who desire to locate a girls' team. Unfortunately, Dayton doesn't have a girls' team. A few of the boys youth teams have female members, and some of the teams have looked at opening part of their ice for interested girls, but I don't know of any substantial plans to grow girls' hockey. Because the Dayton Fangs have already begun to be noticed in the community we would love to help fill this void, but I'll need a lot of help. Youth teams are much more difficult to create. First, there are issue of liability and certification not needed with adult hockey. Second, there are issues with parental transportation and support. And there are issues with age groups. USAH requires that all instructors be certified. There are a few different age groups for girls' hockey; Nineteen (19) or under Sixteen (16) or under Fourteen (14) or under Twelve (12) or under Ten (10) or under It is highly unlikely that we would be able to form teams for each age group. More likely we could form a 12 and Under and a 19 and Under, at the most. So ages 19-13 would be on one team and ages 12 and under would be on another. I've set up an initial website and we can talk more about the possibilities at the meeting on October 1 at 9 p.m. at SouthMetro in Centerville.
