Legg Lake Summer Cross Country Series

Posted by Ralph Casas at Jul 21, 2009 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

2-mile workout for "Week 3" at Legg Lake.  (Note: The time listed in the first column reflects the 2-mile time achieved for a T-pace run 10 minutes prior to the "race.")  Remember, this was a workout.  It's the AVERAGE of the two runs that reflect your fitness. In other words, the official race was really the second part of our normal Wednesday workout.  Times listed in the column under the heading 2008 & 2007, reflect the FASTEST time from the 1st Legg Lake Race in July 07 & 08.

Today marks the official start of the 2009 season and we're excited about the opportunities that lie ahead!  If you know of a boy or girl who wants to be part of a winning tradition and isn't afraid of hard work, let them know about our team.  Cross Country isn't necessarily for people who are the most talented, but for those who are willing to sacrifice and work hard to improve themselves.

Preparation for the 2009 Cross Country season starts NOW!
Over the summer months, all athletes are encouraged to develop a cardiovascular fitness base that will allow them to handle the rigors of training and racing in the fall.  Summer training is not a random attempt to prepare a runner for a long season. It is the first step in a carefully prepared year-long group of "cycles" that leads to the optimum development of a high school runner. No year can be truly successful without a determined effort to get the most out of summer. The summer training cycle allows you to build strength and aerobic efficiency -- very much like the foundation of a building. The stronger the foundation, the higher the building can be built. Our goal is to emphasize strength in order to reduce the possibility of injury, increase the effectiveness of speed-work, and heighten the enjoyment of competition. No athlete who has an incomplete summer really has a fair chance to become the best runner they can be! It is a tremendous sense of accomplishment to look back on a summer and rejoice every time you race well as a result of the hard work you put in. Likewise, it is a constant source of disappointment when you look back over a year and dream of "what could have been."

It is our hope that the parents will help promote the total cross country program and experience at the school by working with and supporting the coaches. In doing so, your child will be better able to reach his/her full potential and enjoy the cross country team and their high school experience to the fullest.

Our Commitment To You:
We will do everything we can to make sure that your son/daughter is a credit to you, our school, and our program. If you need assistance or information regarding how your son/daughter is doing, feel free to give us a call. A coach in today's high school wears many hats with young people, and every one of them is worn with the hope that maybe we can bring out the best in them and teach them valuable lessons that they may use later in life.

On our team, we emphasize that the real contest in cross country – as in life – is striving to reach one's personal best, and that this endeavor is totally within each athlete's own control.  Here are some of the foundations of my coaching philosophy:

  • Running takes work: There is no secret to long distance running. Athletes must be willing to run, run hard, and run frequently.

  • We expect and plan for the best.

  • Every athlete has the potential to be successful.

  • Teams are successful when they are filled with successful individuals; and, team success is always the goal.

  • Excellence is a way of life: The quality of your life is in direct proportion to your commitment to excellence.  Regardless of what you choose to do with your life, ultimately, you make one of the following three choices: to be average, to be good, or to be great – it's YOUR CHOICE!

2009 Pre-Season Preview

Posted by Ralph Casas at Jul 13, 2009 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

2009 Pre-Season Preview
What a difference a year makes. In 2008, both the boys and girls teams raced to overall "Team Time" records in establishing themselves as the fastest teams in school history. Plan on 2009 being a unique one for Matadores harriers. Since spring training began, a majority of the team simply has relished leaving the confined spaces of the track and running on the open trails. Realistically, although this type of training reminds athletes of the glory days of fall, there are issues the varsity level athletes will need to deal with during the long summer. The most significant of those issues has to do with the departure of last season's seniors. Never before has the Matadores team been so young. On the one hand, the #3 through #7 boys are are separated by less than a minute over a 3-mile course. On the other hand, all five members of this chase pack are rookies. In fact of the 70 athletes on the current boy's and girl's roster, over 55 are newcomers to the team or were non-varsity rookies last fall.

BOYS: For most distance runners, who tend to measure their success by their performances, all it takes to get excited about an upcoming season is a really strong showing against a relentless opponent: the clock. At their annual pre-season time trial, La Mirada's boys, led by Regan Garcia (PR = 15:38) and Andrew Herrick (17:22 PR) let their teammates know they intend to step up this season as they established a preseason team-time record that, when extrapolated to a 3-mile course, puts them at 84:06 going into the summer. With four rookies and newcomers close behind, the boys have the closest pack they've had since 2002.

In 2009, the Matadores -- despite graduating three senior members from the varsity team -- are prepared to make a difference in league. Two factors give them high hopes for 2009: strong recruits from track, and the knowledge that the chase pack is running stronger than ever. In fact, it's going to be tough for other teams to break them up! With a new found dedication to success up and down the roster, the boys are eager to show the rest of the cross-country world they are serious about climbing to the top. Besides Regan and Andrew, the projected 2009 lineup includes 3rd year runner, Frankie Nogales, last season's "Rookie of the Year," Clint Bales (17:53 PR), 2008 JV Most Valuable, Eric Wong (18:34 PR) and newcomers Jake Casalou and Moises Cauhultes. Casalou and Cauhultes were the #4 and #6 finishers at the recent time trial. In addition, Eduardo Compollo and Raul Reyes are making a strong case for themselves with their recent performances.

GIRLS: In 2008, the Lady Mats earned a CIF-SS Division II "Top 10" designation, advanced to CIF-SS Finals for the first time in school history, placed 6 girls in the top 10 at League Finals and scored a record low 17 points on their way to an unprecedented 8th consecutive league title. But, if last week's annual preseason time trial was any indication of things to come, 2009 promises to be even better! Even though their primary goal is to attain a spot on the starting line at Clovis in November, the girls know they have their work cut out for them in a competitive Suburban League. Fortunately, the top 3 Lady Mats are closely packed and already in the mid-18 range with a 4th teammate close behind. Their biggest challenge will be to find three athletes to round out the top varsity spots and close the gap between #4 and #5 that is so big an entire league can fit between.

Led by Lauren McIntyre (18:47 PR & 5:24 PR in the 1600), Celinda Manzo (18:12 PR & 12:02 PR in the 3200), and Ashley Casanover (19:07 PR & 12:02 PR in the 3200), with Paulina Tapia (19:07 PR) less than half a minute behind, the girls surprised themselves by setting a pre-season team-time record that puts them under 1:35.00 going into the summer (almost 5 minutes FASTER than last season!) While this year's "pack of four" is determined to make onlookers forget the success of last year's team, there's still a lot of work to be done. In fact, the biggest surprise of the day wasn't the overall team time or the four leaders. What stood out the most was the person in the #5 spot. When the results were tallied and the times reported, the #5 runner for the day was Freshman, Nicole Hammonds, a volleyball player/hurdler who just wanted to "work out with the team." In the final time trial of the spring, Hammonds ran over a minute faster than her first try: the equivalent of 19:50 on a 3-mile course. Rounding out this season's squad, and contending for top spots, are four Lady Mats: Aja Labasan (20:10 PR), Amber Hickman (20:27 PR), Olivia Crigler (21:09 PR) and Charlene Gantan.
