Another strong outing by Tyler Ryan and an error free defense was enough to allow the Mavericks to capitalize on three San Marcos errors and score two runs for a 2-1 win. Tyler Ryan went the distance, allowing only 1 earned run in the 5th inning on a lead off walk and two bloop singles. Ryan had pitched 18 consecutive scoreless innings before the Knights could punch across the 1 run. Ryan allowed 6 hits, struck out 7 and walked only 1. Sean Murphy took the loss for San Marcos in an excellent effort in which he allowed only two hits, walked 3, hit 2 batters and struck out 6. In the top of the first Nacario singled, went to 2nd on a wild pitch and moved to third on Casey Sterk's sacrafice bunt. When Joey Burke lined out to short the throw to third trying to double up Nacario went into the dugout and Nacario scored on the throwing error. The only other hit the Mavs had was a single in the 4th by William Stoffel. In the bottom of the 6th Paul Oseguera reached on an error by the short stop, and pinch runner Eddie Signaigo was able to race around to third on a throwing error on a ball hit to first by Stoffel. Alvarez then hit a sacrafice fly to center to score Signaigo, and Stoffel who had been running on the pitch had to hustle back to first. In the top of the 7th Ryan allowed two singles, but got a fly ball out to Stoffel, a strike out and a fly ball out to Sterk to end the game. Sterk had 4 put outs including one running catch in the 3rd. Pitching and Defense.

MAVERICKS POWER PAST WILDCATS 19-4

Posted by Ruth Stoffel at Apr 25, 2002 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Seventeen hits, including five home runs, two triples and two doubles, powered the Mavericks past El Camino 19-4. Anthony Alvarez put two shots into the parking lot for a total of five runs batted in, Nick Diehl added a solo shot over the fence, Chris Fuller raced around the bases for an inside the park home run and Jackson Chapalone hit one so far into the right center gap that the two outfielders disappeared. Chapalone finished 3 for 4 with 4 rbi's. Casey Sterk was 3 for 5 with a 1b, 2b and 3b and 4 rbi's. Defensive highlights included a diving stop by Joey Burke, a flip to Fuller from his stomach, that started the 6-4-3 double play; and a diving catch by Will Stoffel in left. Johnny Zepeda started the game and after allowing 3 runs in the first inning settled in to pick up his second win, on 4 innings, 2 earned runs, 5 hits, 4 strike outs and 4 walks. Michael Kenney pitched the final 3 innings, allowing no runs, 1 hit and striking out 3. The Mavericks upped their overall record to 6-0 in league and 19-4 overall; while El Camino dropped to 1-4 and 2-15-1.
