2002 MAVERICK BASEBALL AWARDS

Posted by Ruth Stoffel at Jun 3, 2002 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
At the 2002 Maverick Varsity Baseball Awards Banquet Paul Oseguera was recognized as the Offensive Player of the year and both Mike Oseguera (1999) and Paul Oseguera were recognized by Coach Justin Machado announcing that Jersey No. 9, worn by both Mike and Paul, will be retired. Other Awards were the Most Valuable Player to Avocado League Pitcher of the Year - Tyler Ryan; Defensive Player of the Year to Chris Fuller and the 2002 Maverick Award to senior infielder outfielder Eddie Signaigo. The Mavericks finished with their best winning record ever, 13-1 in league and 27-7 overall. Ever since La Costa Canyon High School opened its doors in 1996 an Oseguera has played a prominent role on the Maverick Baseball team. Mike Oseguera from 1997 to 1999 and Paul Oseguera from 1999 to 2002 have played a key part in establishing a winning tradition at La Costa Canyon, which has included for Avocado League Championships in six years, with two 2nd place finishes. Mike Oseguera was the Most Valuable Player in each of his three seasons. He holds team records for the most career pitching wins(22) and the most career runs batted in. Mike also has the second highest on base percentage - .541, second most runs batted in in one season - 33, second most base on balls in one season - 22, second most career hits - 102, third most career home runs - 10, second lowest single season earned run average - 1.20, second most wins in one season - 8, second most career strike outs -218, and second most innings pitched in one season - 73. In his third year at the University of San Diego Mike recently pitched in his first NCAA Division I Tournament game and ended with a 5-2 record. Younger brother Paul Oseguera was a four year Varsity letterman and holds individual team records for the highest single season batting average - .455, highest career batting average - .394, most hits in one season - 46, most runs batted in in one season - 34, most strike outs in one season - 99, most carer strike outs - 245, and most doubles in one season - 13. Paul also has the third lowest single season earned run average - 1.29, second most saves in one season - 3, second most strike outs in one season - 87, and the second most strike outs in one game - 15, all without pitching a single pitch in his senior year. Paul is looking to attend UCLA. Notwithstanding the record numbers the intangible leadership qualities of the two Oseguera brothers will be the things that are missed the most.
