MAVERICKS SEND CARLSBAD HOME IN 5-4 WALK-OFF WIN

Posted by Ruth Stoffel on May 10 2002 at 05:00PM PDT
For the second game in a row against Carlsbad the Mavericks came up with a key hit in the bottom of the 7th inning to secure the win. The last place Lancers (3-10,8-17-1) find a way to play the Mavericks (12-0,25-4) tough but not tough enough. The Lancers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning but lost a run on a cheap shot by the runner who put a shoulder into Anthony Alvarez waiting on the throw from Nacario in centerfield. Alvarez got mad if not even by throwing out the next runner trying to steal second, in the bottom half of the inning he tied the game at 2-2 with a towering home run that landed on the football field (4th), in the 3rd inning he doubled and and in the bottom of the 7th inning he singled in the game winning run. In the top of the 4th inning Carlsbad took a short lived 4-3 lead as Nathan Duarte stole home. In the 5th inning Paul Oseguera tied the game at 4-4 with his 5th home run of the year. In the 6th inning Brian Brehm notched his 5th strike out of the game but Sean Burke's triple to the right center field gap brought in Andrew Logan with two outs. Logan struck out the next batter to strand Burke at third. The Lancers went down in order in the top half of the 7th as Logan got another strike out. In the bottom half of the 7th Jackson Chapelone led off with a double and Paul Oseguera was walked intentionally. Two pinch runners were inserted and Stoffel laid down a bunt down the third base line but Carlsbad got the lead runner at 3rd. With one out Anthony Alvarez then lined a single to left off Lee-Lauduski to score Travis Goldbach with the winning run. Oseguera was 2 for 2, with two walks and an rbi, and Chris Fuller had two hits and an rbi, and a great back hand stab of a hard grounder. Nick Diehl scored once and had four assists at third. Brian Brehm pitched a strong 5 and 2/3rds innings, yielding 4 runs on 5 hits, 5 walks and 5 strike outs. Andrew Logan got credit for his 4th win of the year by pitching to four batters, striking out two and stranding the potential go ahead run at third. Carlsbad's Brian Lee-Lauduski made several great plays at short, and a spectacular dive to tag the first base bag ahead of the runner to end the 6th inning rally but he was charged with his 7th pitching loss of the year.
