Athlete Leadership in Action
I was able to see two of our girls varsity volleyball players in action in the classroom this week. Senior Kennedi Harris served as the lead prosecutor in the Trial of Henrietta Lacks in 3rd Period AP Language and Senior Lesly Soto served as the lead defendant.

Additionally, I witnessed 8th grader Gabby Olivares give a motivational speech to the 7th grade class during Family Gathering on embracing one’s unique self during the tribulation of being a teenager. She likened the process of growing up to a hurricane. That same day she led the volleyball team to win their first set against KIPP 3D with an 7 point serving streak with 2 aces (when the other team doesn’t even touch the ball) in a row! The game ultimately ended in a loss for our Titans, but they have shown tremendous improvement in only one week! After their loss, a security guard mentioned that our team had SUPER SPORTMANSHIP for #takingaction and #extendingnexus by moving the lunch tables back on to the court after the match.

Coaches Corner: WINS, both big and small

  • Coach Stice shouts out the High School Girls Cross Country team for a taking a one-point lead over YP Southwest at the meet last weekend.
  • Coach Marquez (Enrique, Leo’s brother!) shouts out 10th grader Jaime Sierra for hard work at practice, a great attitude, and marked performance improvement since the beginning of the season.
  • Coach Falkner shouts out the Boys Varsity Volleyball team for their first win of the season early on in the tournament last weekend, and Brehon’s commitment to make it to the game.
