Post 527 Survives Elimination Game

Posted by Mark Weigel on Jul 30 2019 at 04:59AM PDT

Taylor Vogel (St. Francis) turned in a clutch relief performance to send Hamburg Post into the final four in the State Tournament. With his team clinging to a narrow 4-3 lead over Smith Post in the top of the sixth, Vogel came on for starter Connor Desiderio (Maryvale) with the tying and go ahead runs in scoring position. He promptly recorded the last two outs, the last on a spectacular diving catch by RF Jordan Prince (Orchard Park). Vogel then struck out the side to close it out and notch the save to go along with the win he picked up in relief on Saturday.

The final 7-3 margin was supplied by Zach Evans, (Lake Shore) who delivered a two run triple and later scored on an error. Hamburg jumped on Smith for three runs in the first inning to stake Desiderio to an early cushion. Tom Furmanski (Albion) got two home with a bases loaded single and Prince drove in the other with a hit of his own. Later, Joe Roward (Orchard Park) drove in Nate Lockwood (Lake Shore) to extend the lead to 4-1.

Hamburg (2-1) now takes on Saugerties (2-1) in another elimination game this morning at 11:00. Rockland County (3-0) takes on Rayson-Miller Post (2-1) out of Pittsford immediately following that game. The finals are scheduled for 10:00 on Wednesday morning.
