The first night of the NRLL Majors playoffs provided a “major” upset as the sixth-seeded Royals blanked the regular-season champion A’s, 3-0, at Benevento Park.

At the plate, the Royals broke the ice in the first inning on a Gavin Wesley RBI single. It remained that way until the fourth when Nick Santiago and Wesley started a rally with back-to-back hits. Santiago then scored on a passed ball, while a Brandon Eng hit brought home Wesley to make it 3-0.

Wesley also starred on the mound. He threw five no-hit innings, striking out five and getting some outstanding defense to preserve the shutout. The A’s did put two runners on base in the sixth and had the tying run at the plate, but younger brother Jackson Wesley pitched out of the jam to earn the save.

The upsets didn’t stop there. In other first-round matchups, the No. 5 Diamondbacks tripped up the second-seeded Angels, 5-4, and the No. 4 Orioles outpaced the third-seeded White Sox, 12-10.

Pool play continues on Wednesday night as teams work to advance to the championship game that will take place Saturday, June 15, at 10 a.m. at Benevento Park.
