2011 All Star Tryout Process and Selection

Posted by Steve Poore on May 15 2011 at 05:00PM PDT

Below you will find important information regarding the upcoming All Star team selection process.

Mercer Island Little League All Star Teams

Mercer Island Little League (MILL) fields three separate baseball All Star teams that compete in District 9 tournaments for the right to advance to the State tournament. These teams are:

o   Majors All Star Team: comprised of the best selection of kids league ages 11 or 12 that are currently playing in MILL;

o   11 year old All Star Team: comprised of the best selection of kids, league age 11, not playing on the Majors All Star team; and

o   9-10 year old All Star Team: comprised of the best selection of kids, league age 9 or 10, that are currently playing in MILL.

Each team consists of 11 to 14 kids, depending on what that team’s All Star coach determines will yield the best team to compete in tournament play for the season.

If the 9-10 year old and the 11 year old All Star teams win the District 9 tournament, they advance to the Washington State tournament. There is not tournament play beyond State at those levels. The Majors team can advance beyond State if they win both the District 9 and State tournaments.

Commitment for All Stars

The All Stars season begins immediately following the completion of the Bellevue/Mercer Island City Tournament (tentatively set for 6/2-6/14). Notice to kids nominated to try-out for the All Star teams will be sent out on June 15th. Tryouts for the Majors  team will be scheduled prior to the 11 Team tryout so kids can attend both.  10 year olds will not be permitted to play a level-up. , they are only eligible to play on the 9-10 team.  Each All Star manager  will design and run the tryouts. Notification of kids selected to play on the All Stars will happen shortly after tryouts are completed.

Families of players selected for an All Star team will be required to affirmatively commit to attend practices and all tournament games. Practices will very likely be held every single day leading up to the District Tournaments and sometimes twice per day.

Tournament dates are:

9-10 year old All Stars

-          District 9 : Everest Park, Kirkland, July 2-12

11 year old All Stars

-          District 9 : Bellevue East, July 2-12

Majors All Stars

-          District 9 : Hartman Park, Redmond, July 9-19

-          State : Vancouver

Process for selecting nominees for tryouts

Major All Star nominees are selected through a combination of player and coach voting. Both player and coach voting takes place during the MILL tournament (starting the week of May 17th) and in addition to peer nominations, each All Star Manager can add a few nominees as well.

All star Nominees  for 11 year old and 9-10 year old All star teams will be selected by the coaches.   As mentioned above, tryouts will start  June 15th which will result in the selection of the team from the nominees.

There will be approximately 16-24 nominees for each All Star team, and from those nominees 11-14 kids will be selected. It is important to note that the selection of each team is based on fielding the best lineup for tournaments, not necessarily selecting the best 11-14 players individually. Managers will be ensuring they have all positions well covered, for example prioritizing strong pitchers and catchers, as well as a strong mid-infield lineup, etc.

We hope all players in the Mercer Island Little League are having an enjoyable and rewarding season. Those players that have been nominated by their peers and/or coaches for All Stars should be honored. More so, we hope those players who are not nominated or selected will recognize that they are a very important part of this process.

Best of luck to our All Star Teams!!

Sincerely,

The MIBGC Athletics Staff & MI Little League Board
