2016-17 Season - Registration has Begun

Posted by Eric Cyker at Sep 22, 2016 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Hello Hockey Players,

Our new registration website is now open for business.  Please read the League and Registration Info, which was also emailed.

Here are a few words of clarification about the number of playing spots available.  We have intentionally set the player limits to force some people to the wait lists.  We did this to try to eliminate anyone signing up with USA Hockey and not having a spot to play in the league.  If you receive a 'sold out' message, DO NOT register with USA Hockey, but please DO sign up on the wait list.  We will add more teams when there are enough people on the wait list to fill another team.  When that happens, we'll contact you to sign up with USA Hockey and submit your league payment.

Some changes you will notice from past seasons:

  • Online registration, mentioned above, is mandatory.  You will have the opportunity to pay online as well, via credit card, debit card or bank account.  You may mail us a check if you prefer.
  • The league fees are increasing from $420to $430 this season ($215 for A/B goalie) and we are eliminating the discount for signing up quickly.  League fees have not changed since the 2009-10 season.  Since that time we have been able to absorb all of our cost increases through the use of reserve funds that had been previously accumulated .  We are adjusting the fees slightly this year to try to maintain a healthy reserve and eliminate a much larger increase in the future.
  • The team formation for A/B is changing to the same process we have used in B/C for about eight years.  Teams will be built from scratch each season, with players being assigned to rosters in a randomized manner.  As in the past, A/B players will be able to request to play with one other player.  Over the past few years, the number of players in A/B has continued to decrease and last year we were forced to delay the start of the season.  Ultimately, we assembled rosters that were one or two players short on each team.  Our attempts to balance the teams over the past five years have failed.  The trend is not sustainable.  We want to continue to provide a league for A and B level players, and to do so we need to do something different than what we have been doing.  This model has worked extremely well for the B/C division, and the opportunity to play with new teammates each season has been popular.  Our experience with B/C is that it will take us a few years to gain enough player knowledge to get the teams balanced, but we do expect to see immediate improvement.
  • Last year we introduced a new policy of allowing only one “impact” level sub per B/C team.  This year we will also be restricting B/C subs to playing eight games.  The original concept of allowing subs was to let a friend or two who could not play full time be able to participate.  Recently, the sub positions have been used as a way to strengthen a team’s roster during the regular season.  Although each team qualifies for playoffs, with some subs playing 15 or 20 games, the efforts we make to balance the teams are compromised a bit.

If you are new to the league and want to play, you can find out a lot about the league by reading the information and downloads on this website, including last year's schedule.  If you still have questions, send us an e-mail.

Disciplinary Policy

Posted by Eric Cyker at Sep 1, 2016 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Disciplinary Committee is commissioned by the IAHA Board to set guidelines, review incidents, and recommend appropriate disciplinary action to the full board. The Committee members are:

James Orcutt, Jr., IAHA Board, Disciplinary Committee Chair, james@jamesorcutt.com

Brad Buell, IAHA Board, bdbuell1313@gmail.com

Craig McAllister, IAHA Player and Referee, cm248@cornell.edu

Eric Cyker, IAHA Board, eric@compcenter.com

Frank Lee, IAHA Board, flee784@gmail.com

A review will be initiated whenever a game sheet indicates any game ejection or misconduct penalty. A review can also be requested by any league participant when he or she feels a player has acted too aggressively or in an otherwise inappropriate manner, even if no penalty was recorded. To request a review, contact a committee member. Include details of the incident and the names of others who can corroborate your complaint. Anonymous reports will not be reviewed. Accused players will be given an opportunity to comment. Referees are contacted to obtain their perspective of each incident. Reviews are handled primarily via e-mail.

We understand this is not a complete list of the infractions. We have classified these into several degrees of seriousness. As necessary, we will add to the list. We have chosen these actions as inappropriate in our league. We feel they simply are not part of the sport of hockey and do not belong in our adult league.

The suspensions listed are guidelines we will use. We will review each incident individually. We feel it is unlikely that it will be appropriate to reduce a penalty below what we have listed; hopefully it won't be necessary to lengthen a suspension. But we are retaining the flexibility to do either.

Suspensions will carry over into the following season, when necessary.

If a substitute player is involved, rather than trying to figure out when the player would have played again, we will simply double the total suspension (USA hockey + additional suspension). For those players who both sub and hold a regular roster spot, the eligibility date will be based on the player’s regular league schedule, regardless of the league in which the incident occurs.

All recommended penalties listed are in addition to any required USA Hockey suspensions:

No Additional Suspension:

• Third player interfering with a fight, if the involvement does not cause the fight to escalate.

Additional One Game Suspension:

• Fourth and subsequent players interfering with a fight, if the involvement does not cause the fight to escalate.

• Third and subsequent game ejections because of four penalties in one game.

Additional Two Game Suspension:

• Sucker Punch

• Flagrant Two-Handed Slash

• Fight Instigator

• Third and subsequent players interfering with a fight, if the involvement causes the fight to escalate.

• Leaving the bench during a fight

• Leaving the crease to join a fight

Additional Three Game Suspension:

• Hit-from-Behind into the Boards or Net

• Spear

• Butt End

• Kick

• Head Contact Major

Additional Four Game Suspension:

• Fighting

Season Suspension - Player must meet with the Board prior to the next season:

• Wayne Maki/Marty McSorley type stick swinging

 • Flagrant Intent to Injure

Injury to a Player or Official as the result of any of the above infractions, if the action is deemed deliberate or reckless

 • Second penalization for any of the above infractions in the same season. The Board may impose a season or extended suspension for repeat offenses that occur over multiple seasons.

Abuse of Official • Mild Verbal Abuse – no additional games

• Continued abuse after being given ample time to settle down – one additional game

• Threatening or making contact with Official – three additional games
