Frequently Asked Questions

REGISTRATION

Where do I register for Tenafly Little League baseball?
Register through Communitypass by clicking here

I am having problems registering. Where can I get help?

Please maintain one family account for registrations and do not create multiple Communitypass accounts for the same family/child.  This will allow you to see all your registrations under one user name log-in and reduce confusion with trouble-shooting potential issues.
If you have forgotten your user name and/or password, please go to the Communitypass page and use the link under the "Sign In" button to get your login and/or password information or click here.
For additional help, email a description of your issue along with the name that you are registered under on Communitypass to info@tenaflylittleleague.com .

I do not recall if I registered my child and/or myself as a coach. How can I check my registrations?
Log into Communitypass and choose the names of the individuals that you want to check. Click continue and completed registrations will be listed at the bottom of the page where you “Select Programs”.  Also, if the program that the person should be registered for is still an option on this page, then the person is not registered. A person cannot be registered twice for the same program.

We do not live in Tenafly, but our child goes to school in Tenafly.  How can we participate in Tenafly Little League?
Tenafly Little League is exclusively for children who live or go to school in Tenafly.  If you feel your child qualifies and are having problems registering through Communitypass, then send an email to
info@tenaflylittleleague.com with the full name your account is registered under, full name of your child(ren) who you want to register and the school and grade that they attend.  We will review this information and respond.

We need to withdraw our registration.  How do we request withdrawal?
Email
info@tenaflylittleleague.com with your request and reason for withdrawal. Refunds for withdrawals will incur a $10 processing fee charged by our vendor. After practices begin, there are no refunds since teams have been organized and baseball uniforms and other expenses have been confirmed.

BASEBALL SEASON

When do games begin?
Practices are planned to start in mid-March and games a few weeks later. Your child’s assigned coach will contact you prior to practices with schedule info. The regular recreational baseball season ends on Saturday June 14th.

When are games played during the week?
Practices and games are generally scheduled at 6:00 p.m. and after during the school week and from 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays. This is subject to change since scheduling is dependent on the number of teams in each division and the availability of fields. Your child’s assigned coach will receive the schedules in March at the coaches’ meeting and then distribute it to you.

This is my child’s first time playing baseball. Is Tenafly Little League right for him or her?
Yes. Tenafly Little League is an instructional league at all age levels.

My child is in kindergarten/first grade. How will their baseball skills be assessed?
TLL has a Ratings Night for each T-Ball (kindergarten) and Farm (first grade) levels. Volunteers help to assess these budding player’s throwing, hitting and catching skills.

How long are practices and games?
Approximately 2 hours.

Where are practices and games held and how do I get there?
At various fields in Tenafly. We also use a field in Alpine. Please see the section “Tenafly Fields & Directions” on the left side menu.

What are the general levels of play?
Age Division Grade
5-6 T-Ball K
6-7 Farm 1
7-8 Inters 2
8-10 Minors 3-4
10-12 Majors 5-6
13-14 Juniors 7-8

What is my child’s league age?
In order to determine the “league age” of any participant or candidate, you may click on the "League Age Calculator" link:

Little League Age Calculator

What is the Challenger Baseball Division?
The Challenger Division enables boys and girls with physical and mental challenges to enjoy the game of baseball. This division encourages the use of "buddies" for the Challenger players. Buddies assist the Challenger players on the field, but, whenever, possible, encourage the players to bat and make plays themselves.

How do I get more information about volunteering as a Challenger Buddy?
We appreciate your interest. Please email TenaflyLLChallenger@gmail.com for more information.

What equipment do I need to get?
For all age divisions, the minimum equipment parents need to provide is a baseball glove. Baseball shoes are very important since they provide traction. They are optional for tee ball, but strongly suggested in other divisions.
Bats are optional. TLL does provide bats, but most players prefer to provide their own bats. All bats must be Little League approved. Make sure that all bats state “Approved for Little League” or “Approved for T-Ball” or something similar or they will not be allowed. A good source of information is the Little League Baseball Bat Resource page.
Although TLL does provide batting helmets, most players get their own. Again, make sure the batting helmet is approved for Little League or for T-Ball (as appropriate). Helmets that are altered are not allowed.
For male players, athletic cups are required for Minors level and above.

What equipment does TLL provide?
TLL provides shared bats, helmets and catcher’s equipment. TLL provides all game and practice balls. Of course, equipment at the field (bases, home plate, pitching rubbers, lights, the field itself) is provided. For the spring recreational league, TLL also provides every player with a team baseball cap and team jersey. Pants are provided for Inters, Minors, Majors and Juniors Divisions.

COACHING

How many coaches are there to a team?
This depends on how many parents volunteer to coach. Three coaches for a team is ideal.

I have never coached before. Should I try now?
Yes. In the T-Ball and Farm Divisions, a very basic understanding of baseball is ok. Parents can often assist the Manager by helping to keep order in the dugout, on the field, putting helmets on upcoming batters, etc., all without any baseball knowledge. It is not at all unusual for a T-Ball team to have many coaches in addition to the Manager.
In the older divisions, newer coaches are usually paired with coaches with more experience.
Please make a note of your coaching experience or lack thereof in the Special Requests section when registering as a coach.

Are there resources to help me learn to coach or to coach better?
Little League offers the Coach Resource Center at:
http://www.littleleague.org/managersandcoaches/Coach_Resource_Center.htm

How do I volunteer to coach?
First register on Communitypass to coach. With this information, we will follow-up with you with information on how to complete the other requirements.

What qualifications do I need in order to coach?
None.  You will need to be fingerprinted and apply for a coaching card thru the National Alliance for Youth Sports (NAYS).

How do I get fingerprinted?
First you pick up a form at the Tenafly Recreation Office and follow the directions on the form.  You will need to schedule an appointment to get fingerprinted and then when you get fingerprinted, return the form to the Tenafly Recreation Office.

How do I register to become a coach with the National Youth Sports Coaches Association (NYSCA)?
Register online at www.nays.org and complete registration for the sport you wish to coach.  You may be required to take a training course prior to receiving your card for each sport you choose to coach.

TENAFLY TRAVEL BASEBALL

What is Travel Baseball and how does my child participate in this?
Please see the Travel Baseball sections using the links to the left to learn more about this.

When are spring travel tryouts taking place?
Please see the
Spring Travel Tryout Information link on the left side menu.

Where will spring travel tryouts take place?
At Teels Baseball & Softball Training Center located at 100 Oakland Avenue, Closter, NJ 07624.

After tryouts, how do I know if my child is on a team?
An email will go out one to two weeks after tryouts are concluded.

How old do you need to be to play travel?
Children as young as six years old have participated in tryouts. Keep in mind that the youngest travel team level is 8U, which is basically 8 year olds, so consideration of not only a child's physical skills is important, but also their psychological maturity level.

What age groups are the teams for travel?
Ages 8 thru 14.

When does the spring travel season begin and end?
From mid-March to mid-June.
