^*Peter Merena is a sixth year USA Track and Field  (USATF) Club Coach and a USATF Official. He is a former Southern Catskill SOCAT (NY) long jump Official where he was tutored by the infamous Olympic & Penn Relays Starter, Tom McTaggart, et. al. In his short tenure as a formal club coach, four of Coach Merena’s athletes have advanced to the National Championships, e.g., 2015 and 2014 in the high jump and the shot put and in the youth turbo javelin (2013, 2012). Several athletes have advanced to, or medaled in, the Outdoor Age Group Championships and/or Junior Olympics. Several more have medaled in the Middle-Atlantic Association Indoor Championships - namely the long jump. And, in youth cross country (2015). Coach Merena was a competitive distance runner for 19 years before being injured in a skiing accident (in 2015 he returned to competition as both a sprinter and a long distance ruuner). As a member of the USA National Team Training Squad for Team Handball (en route to the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Summer Games), he watched many of his teammates go on to represent the United States four years later in the 1988 Seoul Olympiad. In his spare time, Coach Merena is also a stroke & turn official for USA Swimming. He has recently petitioned PIAA to become a high school track and field and/or swimming official in PA (EO2015/2016 exam date(s)). Mr. Merena is one of the rare coaches in PA willing to teach very young athletes, ages 5 to 8 – NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!
