ELEMENTARY LEAGUE: MURPHY & SOUTH CENTRAL TIE

Posted by Coach Mo at Nov 14, 2015 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

South rolls up big yards on the ground, mostly behind the running of former offensive lineman-turned fullback Angelo Gastelo.  Garstello had multiple long runs to include a game breaking 35 yard run for a touchdown.  He also shined on defense as a rush tackle.

Nic Shore scored late in the second half to put South Central up but a gritty Murphy team took advantage of Cougar miscues to make a game of it.

Scoring late on a long run, the Phoenix made sure the road to the playoff will run though Murphy.  These teams will meet again for a PSL championship berth.  With wins over both teams, the Phoenix Grizzlies have clichched the PSL regular season championship.

GRIZZLIES SHINE ON VS SOUTH CENTRAL

Posted by Coach Mo at Nov 7, 2015 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

DIVISION II

Grizzlies beat South Central 19-6

Last week the Grizzlies jumped a younger Murphy team 44-0, but the going was a little rougher against a seemingly evenly matched South Central team.  Both teams had a mixture of veterans and newbies but it came down two the two dominant backs...and of course defense.

The Grizzlies led 12-0 and appeared to be pulling away but an 85 yard run by Steven Navarro put the Cougars back in business and the score was narrowed to 12-6 in a matter of seconds.  Fellow back Jaimie Garcia, fresh off a 200 yard game last week rolled up another 100 game as did former team-mate Navarro.  The two also traded helmet paint as the two were also middle linebackers focused on one another.

The difference was the Grizzlies defense which forced 6 turnovers and never gave Cougar quarterback Nic Shore much time to ge tthe ball away for the entire game.  Two key fumbles for forced during Cougar drives.

SOUTH CENTRAL HOLDS OFF GRIZZLIES

Posted by Coach Mo at Nov 7, 2015 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

SOUTH CENTRAL 12, PHOENIX GRIZZLIES 6

Whittier's Tyler Brown scored on an 85 yard pass play to put the Grizzlies within reach but it was too much to late.  South Central running backs Mike Ramirez  and Destination Salazar both had multiple 50 yard runs and over 100 total each as South Centrals ball-control offense and effective offensive line play, led by Matt Caldwell was the difference between the two teams.

But it was a small difference as East's linemen, most not as big, did a great job against their bigger opponents, paving the way for their running game, which as nearly as effective.

Both teams, made up of students mostly from the central Phoenix corridors, played very well defensively but the Grizzlies gained an advantage when two later arrivals exposed the edge they had in the passing game.  doubling at linebacker, Brown also had jarring hits on defense.
